The Coprinoid State of Rhacophyllus Lilacinus

Abstract: Rhacophyllus lilacinus was obtained in moist chamber from bark collected in Austin, Texas. A perfect state of an undescribed fungus, Coprinus clastophyllus sp. nov., developed in laboratory culture from R. lilacinus. Some morphologic, cultural, cytologic and genetic features of both states are discussed and illustrated.

“…or Psathyrella (Fr.) Maniotis (1964) discovered an unequivocal teleomorph in a culture of Rhacophyllus lilacinus, i.e., basidium-bearing, normal, coprinoid fruiting bodies, and he named this "perfect state" Coprinus clastophyllus Maniotis. Subsequently, Patouillard (1913) concluded that his fungus represented Rhacophyllus lilacinus or a close relative.…”

“…Subsequently, Patouillard (1913) concluded that his fungus represented Rhacophyllus lilacinus or a close relative. Malengon & Bertault (1970), still unaware of Maniotis's (1964) research, accepted Rhacophyllus as a good genus of agarics, lacking sporulating basidia, noting that the internal structure reported by Reijnders & Malenqon (1969) represented a modified hymenium with sclerotised modified basidia. Petch (1926) next described in detail its development, concluding that Rhacophyllus represented "... an abnormal condition of some sporiferous fungus".…”
