Fan delta systems have long been studied as a kind of good hydrocarbon reservoirs. Although many models have been raised according to their local conditions, there still exists some controversies regarding the formations of the ones developed in continental syn-rift settings. Taking Paleogene Es3 2+3 of Gaobei Slope Belt as an example, this paper conducted a comprehensive geological study and a forward depositional modeling. The results show that the sediment within the study area came mainly from the northeastern Baigezhuang uplift and the northwestern Xinanzhuang uplift over a short distance. The sedimentary system is characterized by subaerial debris flow, subaerial braided channels, subaqueous distributary channels, front sand bars and front sand sheets. Furthermore, the study area is a balance-filled basin that experienced a 3rd order normal regression followed by a transgression during the development of the study interval. The results also show that, a stable subsidence rate with small-magnitude climate changes would be a plausible explain for the entire sequence of the fan delta system in the study area. The tectonic subsidence was indeed the dominant driving force to a continental syn-rift fan delta system, although the climate, sediment supply or lake level might bring some lower order (e.g., 4th and 5th order) superimpositions. This paper proposed a likely model for fan deltas developed in continental syn-rift settings, which is expected to gain some insights into the forming mechanism and provide some supports for the reservoir characterization of similar and correlative sedimentary systems.

The Mesozoic volcanic rocks are widely developed in the Bohai Bay basin. The D oilfield, located in the southeast of the Bohai Bay Basin, is a Cenozoic depression developed on the base of the Mesozoic. The types of the volcanic rocks are complex and the reservoir space is diverse. According to the characteristics of the volcanic reservoir, such as vertical multi-stage and strong heterogeneity, and based on the analysis of the volcanic core observation, thin section identification, logging data and seismic data, we analyzed the reservoir space type, physical property characteristics and reservoir physical property control factors of volcanic reservoir in the study area. The results show that the volcanic rocks in the study area are mainly volcanic breccia, andesite and tuff; the lithofacies types mainly include volcanic eruption facies, effusion facies and volcanic sedimentary facies, and the volcanic eruption facies is the most developed. Four types of volcanic reservoirs and 14 effective storage space types have been identified from the macroscopic and microscopic multi-scale, mainly intergranular pores, intergranular dissolution pores, intracrystalline pores, structural fractures and weathering dissolution fractures. Reservoir performance is mainly affected by lithology, lithofacies, tectonic activity and diagenesis. The primary pores in the upper part of exhalative and explosive facies are the most developed. Early cement filling is beneficial to the preservation of primary intergranular pore space and is an important prerequisite for the formation of secondary dissolution pores. Under the action of multi-stage tectonic movement and weathering leaching, the reservoir performance of volcanic rocks has been greatly improved, and the volcanic rocks with superimposed fractures and porosities are effective volcanic reservoirs.

Petrological analysis, thin-section observation and laboratory analysis data were selected to systematically study the physical and diagenetic features of the first member of the Paleogene Shahejie Formation (Es1) in the No. 3 structural belt of the Nanpu Sag, Bohai Bay Basin. The intensities of different diagenetic processes were determined, the diagenetic evolution sequence was reconstructed, the typical diagenetic facies were identified and the effects of different diageneses on the reservoir were quantitatively analyzed. The results show that the main intergranular fillings include authigenic-quartz, quartz secondary enlargement, clay minerals, carbonate cement and matrix. The pore types include intergranular porosity, dissolution porosity and microfractures. The reservoir has experienced compaction, early cementation, dissolution and late cementation, among which compaction is the most important porosity reducer. Compaction was the main diagenetic process involved in porosity reduction, accounting for about 24.4% of the loss of thin-section porosity. The dissolution process clearly improved the porosity, increasing thin-section porosity by 2.7%. Five diagenetic facies were identified on the basis of petrographic analyses, namely, (a) strongly compacted-weakly cemented-weakly dissolved facies; (b) weakly compacted-strongly cemented-weakly dissolved facies; (c) moderately compacted-moderately cemented-weakly dissolved facies; (d) strongly compacted-weakly cemented-moderately dissolved facies; and (e) strongly compacted-weakly cemented-strongly dissolved facies. According to the analysis of diagenesis intensity, the porosity evolution model of various diagenetic facies was reconstructed, and the reservoir quality of various diagenetic facies was quantitatively predicted. The reservoir quality of different diagenetic facies clearly changed with depth. The best reservoir quality was in strongly compacted–weakly cemented–strongly dissolution facies, which have good sorting, contain a large amount of feldspar and soluble debris, and are mainly developed in the main part of the river channel. Our study can provide a reference for the subsequent exploration and development of deep petroleum systems.
