The Control of Cell Expansion, Cell Division, and Vascular Development by Brassinosteroids: A Historical Perspective

Abstract: Steroid hormones are important signaling molecules in plants and animals. The plant steroid hormone brassinosteroids were first isolated and characterized in the 1970s and have been studied since then for their functions in plant growth. Treatment of plants or plant cells with brassinosteroids revealed they play important roles during diverse developmental processes, including control of cell expansion, cell division, and vascular differentiation. Molecular genetic studies, primarily in Arabidopsis thaliana, b… Show more

“…Phytohormones play crucial roles in plant growth and development. Previous studies have shown the involvement of auxins, gibberellins, and brassinosteroids in promoting cell division and growth during internode elongation in rice (Chen, 2001;Yin et al, 2002;Tong et al, 2014;Oh et al, 2020). For instance, BR receptor kinase OsBRI1 of rice positively regulates internode elongation by inducing the formation of the intercalary meristems (Yamamuro et al, 2000).…”

“…Brassinosteroids (BRs) are an important group of polyhydroxylated sterol plant growth regulators in multiple developmental processes, at nanomolar to micromolar concentration, including cell division, cell elongation, vascular differentiation, reproductive development, and modulation of gene expression [ 1 ]. BRs also influence various other developmental processes such as the germination of seeds, rhizogenesis, flowering, senescence, abscission, and maturation.…”

“…Therefore, these difficulties have stimulated the search for more accessible and bioactive analogs. The idea is to use natural molecules with chemical structures similar to BRs, such as stigmasterol (4) [18][19][20], pregnenolone (5) [21], hyodeoxycholic acid (6) [22,23] and diosgenin (7) [24,25] as starting material (Figure 1).…”
