Background: There are many factors in determining language proficiency among university students. Identifying these factors can help the teaching and learning process to move forward more quickly and effectively. Purpose: This study aimed to explore the relationship between social, cultural, and linguistic factors and the language proficiency of 221 medical and paramedical students at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences to identify if these factors contribute to language proficiency as an effective variable in students’ communication, academic performance, and quality patient care. Method: The authors administered a questionnaire on these factors' role and a proficiency test. Then, they ran Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression analyses to determine the relationship and effects of such factors concerning language proficiency. Results: The t-test revealed a statistically meaningful difference between medical and paramedical students concerning both mean scores of proficiency and cultural factors. The results indicated only social and cultural factors statistically correlated with paramedical students’ proficiency. Furthermore, none of these factors built any relationship or exerted any effects on the proficiency of medical students. Conclusion: The results implied that educational policymakers should consider the existing differences between university students of different fields since they come from different sociocultural and linguistic backgrounds that have affected the academic stance in which they are studying. Moreover, the findings necessitate encouraging the policymakers and university lecturers to enhance their sociocultural competencies to adapt and fulfill the needs of such students and highlighting the roles of the family's socioeconomic positions through some workshops since the role of the family is an important variable in determining the extent to which a learner has acquired a specific cultural competence.

People communicate through social media using various languages. One social media application that has gained a lot of users during this pandemic time is TikTok. This translation and the popularity of TikTok bring the writer to discuss about the translation of TikTok terms from English to Indonesian. The purposes of this research were to analyze the principle of translation, strategy of translation and the most dominant strategy used by the translator in translating TikTok terms from English to Indonesian. This research used qualitative methodology. The technique of analyzing data in this research used qualitative approach. This study uses the theory of Chesterman of Translation strategy. The writer collected 50 TikTok terms from the app. The terms consist of 18 words, 21 phrases and 11 clauses. The writer found out some principles in terms used in Indonesian version of TikTok app which is translated from the English version: meaning, idiom, and source language influence. From 50 data collected, the writer found 6 kinds of translation strategies and used in translating terms from English version of TikTok app to Indonesian version. The translator employed literal translation strategy in 28 collected data, calque strategy in 10 collected data, loan strategy in 1 collected data, naturalization in 1 collected data, and unit shift in 4 collected data.

As English language teachers explore existing writing assessment approaches and strategies, it is, however, inevitable to encounter challenges in the different phases of writing assessment. The challenge is not confined alone to the development of writing assessment tools but more so to the establishment of fair and reliable results for writing performance. It has been argued that the gap between norms and traditions among language schools is one root of such a challenge. One writing assessment practice may work for one setting but not another. Therefore, the present study is intended to discover the writing assessment approaches and strategies employed by junior high school English language teachers in the context and to identify the relevant challenges they encountered in utilizing such writing assessment practices. To meet the research objective, a qualitative investigation through a narrative inquiry approach was employed. The data were gathered from seven (7) English language teachers in a junior high school in Bataan, Philippines. Self-made, semi-structured interview guides were utilized. The shared narratives from the interviews served as data subjected to thematic analysis. The research investigation revealed that English language teachers generally utilize scoring rubrics and an analytical approach to assess junior high school students’ writing performance. As a result, they have found challenges in assessing writing performance due to strict adherence to the components of scoring rubrics, time constraints, and the poor writing competencies of students. To address the issues, the study suggests writing assessment programs and training that promote contextualization, ICT integration, and learning autonomy. English language teachers value the importance of systematic writing assessment practices while also recognizing the roles of emerging practices that will establish not only fairness but also effectiveness that is responsive to the development of the English writing competencies of the students.
