The contribution of transposable elements to transcriptional novelty in plants: theFLCaffair

Abstract: Transposable elements (TEs) are repetitive DNA sequences with the ability to replicate across genomes and generate mutations with major transcriptional effects. Epigenetic silencing mechanisms that target TEs to limit their activity, including DNA methylation, add to the range of gene expression variants generated by TEs. Here, using the iconic gene flowering locus C (FLC) as a case study I discuss the multiple ways by which TEs can affect the expression of genes and contribute to the adaptation of plants to c… Show more

“…There are several examples of TE domestication, illustrating their contribution both to new genes and cis-regulatory sequences [54]. In Arabidopsis, TE fragments are present in the first intron of the gene encoding the master flowering regulator FLC and in the promoter of the gene LEC2, which encodes a regulator of FLC [55,56]. Both genes are silenced by PRC2.…”

“…Interestingly, in Arabidopsis, TE insertions were recorded exclusively within the (single-copy) FLC locus and not in other flowering time related loci such as SUPPRESSOR of CONSTANS 1 (SCO1), FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) and FLOWERING LOCUS D (FD). Reduction in the regulation of vernalization enables plants to adapt well under drought/hot summer areas and facilitates a rapid lifecycle, while conversely an increase in vernalization facilitates adaptation toward more northerly latitudes (Quadrana, 2020).…”
