The outcome of a conservation policy is often subject to uncertainty. In stated preference valuation, it is increasingly recognised that uncertainty affects preferences for the outcomes of environmental policies. However, there is also agreement that the effect of uncertainty and people's attitudes towards risk need to be better understood. To shed more light on the impact of risk, we designed a discrete choice experiment to compare preferences for environmental outcomes under climate change across two split samples. Each sample was confronted with a scenario where results were presented as certain or uncertain, but were otherwise associated with the same expected values. We found significant differences between the certain and the uncertain treatment, with uncertain outcomes being associated with more extreme utility levels and willingness to pay, in absolute terms. This finding was confirmed irrespective of whether gains or losses were considered and despite sensitivity to uncertainty-specific to the socio-demographic profile. Our results suggest that individuals are not risk neutral in the presence of uncertainty around environmental outcomes. These findings are crucial to better understand stated preferences for conservation policies in risky contexts. Our results reinforce the idea that uncertainty should be explicitly incorporated in the design of stated preference studies to better inform policy.

Groundwater provides a lot of services to the environment as one of the components of the ecosystem, but its over drafting has led to a lot of environmental damage. Estimating the economic value of these damages is one of the important issues in the environmental economics. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the economic value of environmental damages to the landscape, nature, biodiversity and habitat of wildlife (natural ecosystem) in Qazvin plain. Given the lack of real market for environmental goods and services, the stated preference method and choice experiment was used to determine the value of the external effects of groundwater shortage. The conditional and nested logic model has been used to achieve the research objectives. The results showed that the income, educational level, environmental ethics and household size have a positive and significant effect on the level of willingness to pay for groundwater ecosystem services. Attaining the optimal level of biodiversity conservation, wildlife habitat and landscape were in the next places of households willing to pay. The protective value of groundwater was estimated at 879.18 Rials per cubic meter.

The current study examines the relationship between procedural justice and acceptance of public policy, the mediating effect of uncertainty as well as the moderating effect of risk preference in this relationship. Study 1 conducted a questionnaire survey on 154 residents from Beijing. The results showed that risk preference moderated the effect of procedural justice on acceptance of public policy. Accordingly, Study 2 conducted a scenario experiment on 136 college students from Beijing to examine the mediating role of uncertainty, while retesting the moderating mechanism of risk preference in more detail. Results showed that risk preference significantly moderated the effect of procedural justice on acceptance of public policy. Specifically, uncertainty was more negatively associated with acceptance of public policy among the risk‐averse individuals than risk‐seeking individuals. Risk preference indirectly moderated the relationship between procedural justice and acceptance of public policy by moderating the relationship between uncertainty and acceptance of public policy.
