The Contribution of ISI Indexing to a Paper's Citations: Results of a Natural Experiment

Abstract: In this article, I investigate the extent to which ISI Web of Science indexing contributes to the impact of an academic paper. I do this by analysing the results of a natural experiment consisting in the accidental exclusion from the index of an entire issue of a Political Science journal. The statistical tests indicate a significant effect of ISI indexing on the number of citations received by individual papers. The conclusion is that ISI indexing does not simply provide an objective measure of academic impac… Show more

“…Furthermore, we included in the calculation the examples encountered during scanning of the selected articles according to the definitions given in the model of Hyland and Tse for the comprising categories; as Hyland states, MDM is a meaning system with an open‐ended set of language elements. Some examples from scanned articles were:”afterwards, hence, therefore, furthermore, moreover” as transitions or:”in Table , as shown in Fig.…”

“…The ISI also publishes the annual Journal Citation Reports which determines an impact factor (IF) for each of the journals that it includes. Listing in ISI is based on some selection criteria and is an indicator of journal quality and impact . To the best of our current knowledge, there has been observed no study which has worked on the possible correlation between the use of metadiscourse markers (MDMs) and Impact Factors (IFs) of journals publishing these articles.…”

“…Finally, and most importantly, the new editorial team will need to continue our efforts to increase the quality of published papers. This, in turn, will allow the journal to rise in citation rankings and, ultimately, to be admitted to additional indices such as the Journal of Citation Reports, and further increase in recognition and influence (Varela, 2013).…”

“…Existují doklady toho, že viditelnost, která může být indikována např. mírou pokrytí určitého časopisu v bibliometrických databázích, zvyšuje citovanost [Varela 2013]. Zároveň vyšší citovanost zvyšuje viditelnost, protože o citovaném článku se dozví více výzkumníků, kteří narazí na odkaz v citujících článcích, a to vede k ještě vyšší citovanosti.…”
