The contribution of fungi to the global economy

Abstract: Fungi provide ecological and environmental services to humans, as well as health and nutritional benefits, and are vital to numerous industries. Fermented food and beverage products from fungi are circulating in the market, generating billions of USD. However, the highest potential monetary value of fungi is their role in blue carbon trading because of their ability to sequester large amounts of carbon in the soil. There are no conclusive estimates available on the global monetary value of fungi, primarily bec… Show more

“…[2] Even though most of the fungal natural product-derived drugs on the market were originally isolated from species of the Ascomycota, some of them were obtained from Basidiomycota. [3] For instance, the pleuromutilins are a family of sesquiterpenoid antibiotics produced by Clitopilus spp. (Agaricales, Basidiomycota) that are the most recent antibacterial drug class to make it to the market.…”

“…Medicinal mushrooms are gaining increasing attention as emerging foods or functional supplements owing to their significant health benefits and diverse pharmacological activities, such as anticancer, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antidiabetic, and immunomodulatory effects. In 2022, the global market size of medicinal mushrooms was nearly USD 10,000 million, and it is projected to further expand by USD 5939.97 million from 2022 to 2027 . Species commonly used in dietary supplements include Ganoderma lingzhi (Reishi), Grifola frondosa (maitake), Hericium erinaceus (lion’s mane), and Trametes versicolor (turkey tail) .…”

“…Fungi are eukaryotic organisms along with plants and animals with unique morphological, physiological, and nutritional traits ( Nagy et al, 2017 ), which contribute to their profound impact on human hosts ( Niego et al, 2023 ). In terms of human health, interest in fungi has grown exponentially in two opposite directions: first of all, the recognition of the major impact of fungal diseases that has prompted the World Health Organization to launch a list of priority fungal pathogens ( Table 1 and ( Rodrigues and Nosanchuk, 2023 )); as another consequence, the presence of commensal communities of fungi that colonize several sites of the human body ( Cui et al, 2013 ), with implications in human health and disease.…”
