The construction of viewpoint aspect: the imperfective revisited

Abstract: Abstract. This paper argues for a constructionist approach for Aspect by exploring the idea that viewpoint aspect does not exert any altering force on the situation aspect properties of predicates. The proposal is developed by analyzing the point of view where conflicts between situation and viewpoint aspect have been argued to appear in previous literature, namely, the imperfective. The paper focuses on the syntax and semantics of the imperfective, which has been attributed a coercer role as a de-telicizer an… Show more

“…As the contrast in (18) illustrates, denying CUL( e , P tel ) is possible after an incompletive atelic predicate but not after an unmodified accomplishment VP. Similar contrasts have been observed for German (Bott, ) and Spanish (Arche, ). It is hard to see how these contrasts can be accounted for if the VP is assumed to be used as an atelic predicate in both cases.…”

“…The 3x3-system has been applied in important studies on Spanish tense and aspect such as Carrasco & García Fernández (1994), Carrasco (1999), García Fernández (2000, Demirdache & Uribe-Etxebarria (2007, Arche (2014), Fábregas (2015), among others. All are well aware of the problems with Reichenbach's original framework and make use of an influential proposal to improve on Reichenbach's S,R,E-system: Klein (1992Klein ( , 1995Klein ( , 2009).…”

“…In Demirdache & Uribe-Etxebarria (2007) and Arche (2014), the connectives of the two tripartitions pop up as heads in a projection. In Figure 1, from Arche (2014:797), the TP branches into ZP (short for ZeitPhrase (= temporal phrase)), representing S) and T´.…”
