The construction of the World Wide Web‐accessible myocardial two‐dimensional gel electrophoresis protein database “HEART‐2DPAGE”: A practical approach

Abstract: The construction of the two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) gel protein database "HEART-2DPAGE" for human heart proteins, accessible via the World Wide Web (WWW), is described. This database provides the opportunity to retrieve descriptive information interactively by mouse clicking on a protein spot within a 2-DE gel image or to retrieve the position of a protein if its protein name or a search expression is given. The realization of searching for proteins, the creation of clickable spots, marked by crosse… Show more

“…As mentioned earlier, the protein database will be important to serve as a basis for further studies of human disease. There are four 2-DE protein databases of cardiac proteins, established by three independent groups, which can be accessed via the World Wide Web [7,[14][15][16] . These databases facilitate proteomic research into heart diseases containing information In addition, 2-DE protein databases and proteomic maps for other mammals are also under construction to support work on animal models of heart disease [17][18][19][20] .…”

“…In this study we present further data which have been incorporated into the myocardial protein database described previously [20]. We analyzed the disease-specific pattern of protein expression in 13 patients with dilated cardiomyopathy compared to 15 control patients.…”

“…Since the existing studies included only data from a relatively small number of patients and therefore were limited from a statistical point of view, we here report the establishment of a large study comparing the myocardial protein patterns in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy with the protein patterns in a control group. The data have been added to the database previously described by us [20] and are accessible via the Internet (http://www.chemie.fuberlin.de/user/pleiss).…”

“…addition of sugar moieties or lipid attachments to a protein), and interaction with other biological molecules, thus providing new insights into the complex cellular processes involved in cardiovascular dysfunction. To this end, several human cardiac protein databases have been established, 81 and proteome analyses in various human cardiomyopathies 59 88 and animal models of heart disease 44 110 have been reported. The potential for`protein chips' to function as versatile and rigorous high-throughput methods for proteomic analyses is the object of intense investigation.…”
