The Construction and Validation of an Abridged Version of the Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ-Short)

Abstract: This study reports on the development and validation of an abridged version of the 50-item Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ), a self-report measure of autistic traits. We aimed to reduce the number of items whilst retaining high validity and a meaningful factor structure. The item reduction procedure was performed on data from 1,263 Dutch students and general population adults. The resulting 28-item AQ-Short was subsequently validated in 3 independent samples, both clinical and controls, from the Netherlands and t… Show more

“…For comparison, we also evaluated the full AQ (AQ-50; Baron-Cohen et al, 2001), and the AQ short form based on item selections by Hoekstra et al (2011) (AQ-S). The suggested optimal cutpoint for the AQ-10 and AQ-50 based on previous ROC analyses are 6 for the AQ-10 and 26 or 32 for the AQ-50.…”

“…The suggested optimal cutpoint for the AQ-10 and AQ-50 based on previous ROC analyses are 6 for the AQ-10 and 26 or 32 for the AQ-50. Optimal cut-points for the AQ-S dichotomously scored have yet to be established but Hoekstra et al (2011) suggest cut-points of above 65 or 70 or greater when the instrument is scored on a four-point scale.…”

“…We used a Dutch version of the Abridged Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ-short) to measure autistic traits (Hoekstra et al 2011;Pollmann et al 2010). Internal consistency of the scale was good (a = .79).…”

“…Autistic traits have been related to individual differences in personality and behavior (Hoekstra et al 2011). Internet and computer mediated interactions offer advantages for individuals with autistic traits because they enable them to interact with others in a safe and structured environment with reduced contextual, auditory, and visual cues.…”
