During the period of rapid social and economic development spanning four decades of reform and opening up, China has witnessed significant transformations in its patterns of production, living, and ecology. Notably, there has been a noticeable escalation in the conflict between the spatial requirements for agricultural production and those for residential and ecological purposes. In order to address this issue, the government has enacted a set of measures aimed at safeguarding arable land. This study utilizes land use data from 2000, 2010, and 2020 to establish a spatial dataset representing China’s production–living–ecological space (PLES). The intensity analysis approach is employed to examine the features of changes in China’s PLES over the previous two decades. The findings of this study indicate that agricultural production space is mostly concentrated in the northeastern region and the plains of the Yangtze and Yellow River Basins. This distribution pattern has undergone a notable transformation characterized by a period of decline followed by subsequent growth. Simultaneously, the ecological space is primarily dispersed in the northwestern region and the Tibetan Plateau. South of the Hu Huanyong Line, there is a greater proportion of rural living area, urban living space, and industrial production space. Between the years 2000 and 2020, there was an observed increase in the intensity of PLES. This rising trend was primarily characterized by quantitative changes and exchange changes within each type of space. In contrast, between 2010 and 2020, there was a notable increase in the frequency and intensity of spatial transitions, particularly in relation to agricultural production space. Nevertheless, the transition to agricultural production space mostly entails ecological implications, characterized by a decline in cultivation quality but an improvement in environmental advantages. The policy of protecting arable land has a significant influence on the dynamics of the production, living, and ecological domains. To achieve the objective of maintaining the “trinity” of arable land quantity, quality, and ecology, it is imperative for the government to establish a comprehensive system for spatial category conversion. This will ensure the coordinated development of PLES. This study elucidates the constituents of intensity analysis and its analytical concepts, which can be employed to identify alterations in spatial patterns in different areas. It offers scholarly references for the subsequent execution of policies aimed at safeguarding arable land and the development of sustainable land management strategies. Consequently, this study holds substantial importance for advancing economic and social development and fostering sustainable growth.

Spatial Simulation of Land-Use Development of Feixi County, China, Based on Optimized Productive–Living–Ecological Functions

Rural revitalization places higher demands on the productive–living–ecological (P-L-E) spaces of towns and cities. It is necessary, therefore, to identify, evaluate, and optimize P-L-E spaces to better guide spatial planning. Existing studies typically evaluate a single space, lacking a comprehensive consideration of whole-area integration. This study, therefore, developed a coupled spatial/developmental suitability evaluation system for Feixi County, Anhui Province, China, combining spatial quality evaluation, a coupled coordination model, and future land-use simulation (FLUS) model. The spatial quality of Feixi County in 2010, 2015, and 2020 was obtained by applying the evaluation system to the spatial development pattern. The results were analyzed and verified using the landscape pattern index and development suitability evaluation. The results showed the following: (1) The coupling coordination degree of the region increased from 0.131 to 0.372, changing from low to moderate coordination. (2) Based on the FLUS model to better capture the uncertainty and stochastic basis of the development in the study area. The kappa coefficient and Figure of Merit (FoM) index of the land-use simulation accuracy verification index were 0.7647 and 0.0508, respectively, and the logistic regression ROC values were above 0.75, thus meeting accuracy requirements. This demonstrated that the simulation model—based on a factor library of the evaluation of resource and environmental carrying capacity and suitability for development and construction—could better reflect future land-use changes. (3) The simulation showed that under the baseline development scenario, the area’s spatial layout is too concentrated in terms of construction land, ignoring P-L-E coordination. Under the ecological optimization scenario, high-quality ecological space is ensured, but other types of spaces are lacking. Under the comprehensive guidance scenario, lagging ecological space is optimized and P-L-E spatial development is enhanced through aggregation, clustering, concentration and integration. This way, the spatial quantity structure and distribution form can meet P-L-E spatial development needs in Feixi County. In this study, on the basis of scientific assessment of the current P-L-E space, the FLUS model was applied to carry out a scenario simulation according to different objectives. Moreover, based on the construction of the coupling system of human–nature system, the driving factors were improved to enhance the prediction accuracy of the FLUS model. This study’s findings can help improve the scientificity, flexibility and management efficiency of Feixi County’s P-L-E spatial layout, thereby supporting its sustainable development.

Fractal characteristics and influencing factors of landscape space of Tibetan rural in Western Sichuan: a case study of three traditional villages

This study takes the landscape space of traditional Tibetan villages in western Sichuan as the research object, and three national-level traditional villages of different Tibetan clans in Gyatso, Amdo and Baima Tibet were selected as samples. Using the fractal theory, combined with counting-box dimension measurement and spatial analysis methods, it comparatively analyzes the fractal characteristics of their landscape space and their influencing factors. The study finds that the landscape space of these villages has certain fractal characteristics, which are characterized by self-similarity and irregularity. The fractal characteristics of different villages are influenced by various factors such as geographic location, natural conditions, religious beliefs, folk costumes, etc., showing differences and diversity. There is a certain correlation between the fractal dimension and the distribution of landscape elements and spatial patterns, which can be used to describe the complexity and diversity of landscape space pattern. The article believes that the fractal theory provides a new perspective and method for analyzing the landscape space of traditional Tibetan villages, which helps to reveal its intrinsic formation mechanism and cultural connotation and provides new insights for the protection of traditional village heritage and the maintenance of cultural traditions. Meanwhile, the study also points out the limitations and shortcomings of the fractal theory in the study of traditional villages and puts forward directions and suggestions for future research.
