The Connection Between Stress and Immune Status in Pigs: A First Salivary Analytical Panel for Disease Differentiation

Abstract: This paper analyzes the association between stress and immune response activations in different diseases, based on the salivary analytics. Moreover, a first attempt to discriminate between diseases was performed by principal component analysis. The salivary analytics consisted of the measurement of psychosocial stress (cortisol and salivary alpha-amylase) indicators, innate (acute phase proteins: C-reactive protein and haptoglobin), and adaptive immune (adenosine deaminase, Cu and Zn) markers and oxidative str… Show more

“…Each of the salivary parameters studied has its own clinical significance and the information from one could not be replaced by other, but compatible. Those biomarkers without circadian influence in its levels, specifically Pig-MAP, α-amylase and OSI, would be preferable than others, however, for biomarker’s recommendation other factor should also be considered such as the specific conditions to be evaluated, since not all the conditions alter the level of biomarkers in a similar way [ 19 , 63 ].…”

“…The procedure for Total Oxidant Status (TOS) measurement is an in-house adaptation of a commercially available assay (Pierce Quantitative Peroxide Assay Kit, aqueous-compatible formulation) based on Nourooz-Zadeh et al [ 62 ]. The assay has been previously validated for porcine saliva determinations with high precision, accuracy and good limit of detection [ 63 ]. The levels of TOS are calculated using a standard curve of Hydrogen peroxide (0.97 to 31.25 µM Peroxidase equivalents/L).…”

“…Analyzing the microbial content in pig saliva can enable timely diagnosis and facilitate early treatment, which is crucial for improving productivity in the pig industry. By monitoring the microbial content in pig saliva, it is possible to track the development of respiratory infections and implement appropriate preventive and treatment measures [74] (Table 1).…”

“…For example, a study conducted by Sanchez et al (2022) on 107 pigs compared the response and correlation of stress and immune factors in salivary samples. Samples were collected using sponges, and the CRP and Hp levels were determined using an immunofluorometric assay.…”
