The Conceptualization of the Positive Cognitive Triad and Associations with Depressive Symptoms in Adolescents

“…Therefore, it emphasizes the importance of children's cognition in the pathways between the mother-child relationship and children's mental health. Previous studies suggested that the negative cognitive triad is associated with mental health problems (Braet et al 2015) and the positive cognitive triad was a protective factor for mental health (Pittard et al 2021). When dealing with children's mental health problems, the mother-child relationship is important, but it is critical to consider the children's cognition as well.…”

“…The ecological model provides a broad context for understanding the development of depressive symptoms in early adolescence, but thinking of how the micro- and mesosystems may produce cognitive vulnerabilities in more nuanced ways is important. Inspired by Beck, the cognitive triad proposes that the interplay of one’s positive view of self, the world, and the future all interact and relate to lower symptoms of depression (Pittard, et al, 2021). Recent meta-analytic research has demonstrated that adolescents’ perceptions of themselves, the world, and their futures all account for their experience of depressive symptoms (Marchetti & Pössel, 2022).…”
