The Conceptual Design of High Pressure Reversible Axial Tunnel Ventilation Fans

Abstract: Tunnel ventilation fans, classically, must have the ability to both supply and extract air from a tunnel system, with the operator's choice dependent on the tunnel ventilation system's operating mode most appropriate at any given point in time. Consequently, tunnel ventilation fans must incorporate a reversible aerodynamic design which limits the maximum fan pressure rise. This paper presents three high pressure reversible fan concepts. These comprise a two-stage counter rotating fan, a single-stage high speed… Show more

“…The studied fan is 2.24 m in diameter, running at 1500 revolutions per minute and therefore has a blade-tip speed of 175 m per second. Sheard and Daneshkhah 25 considered the practicality of developing a 2.5-m diameter tunnel ventilation fan operating at 1500 revolutions per minute, and therefore having a blade-tip speed of 196 m per second. They evaluated the potential of three new tunnel ventilation fan concepts and rejected a 2.5-m diameter fan running at 1500 revolutions per second because of the high-noise level that occurs with the increase in blade-tip speed.…”

“…Paper [14] presents the designed reversible jet fan, obtained experimental data and CFD results. Reversible aerodynamic design, in fact, limits the maximum fan pressure side [13]. Paper [15] presents a numerical optimization procedure for performance improvement of a jet fan.…”

“…Reversible single-stage axial fans are largely employed in tunnel and metro ventilation systems, to supply and extract air from the tunnels. State-of-the-art solutions include the use of dedicated fans for air supply and extraction, but in general the use of reversible fan rotors, characterized by truly reversible blade sections, has been established as the most convenient [1][2][3].…”
