This inquiry on the Islamic manuscripts intends to illuminate the rich artistic and intellectual writing traditions of the Meranaw Muslims in the Philippines. These Meranaw manuscripts play an important role in guiding people’s lives as a source of religious knowledge that reflects people’s thoughts and aspirations. Moreover, these manuscripts are additionally an important source of knowledge in understanding people’s culture, history, and relationships with other nations, such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Brunei, and more. These manuscripts are handwritten in Arabic script called batang a Arab or in Jawi or kirim. Some of these manuscripts are the handwritten Qur’an, kisas (Islamic stories), prayer scrolls, medicinal manuscripts or mga bolongs, book of kakasi (book of charms), and the ilmo extreme unction and other Islamic manuscripts of importance to the Meranaw. There are also Islamic manuscripts that are written in stencil and printed like the Parokonan, the introductory guide to prayer, Alipalipan ( a book for beginners of the Arabic alphabet), Mawlid/ Barsindi (the devotional song about Prophet Muhammad (P.U.H)), Taabir Mimpi (the book of prophecy), qira’a, Sarf, and Tajwid. To the Meranaws, manuscripts are family belongings with great personal value. They are a family treasure handed down from generation to generation and strictly guarded with great care. Families cover the manuscripts with cloth or skin of an animal for protection and lock them in a chest so that they will be accessed only by their family. This research paper presents the Islamic Manuscript of the Meranaw, describes its characteristics and contents to explain the tremendous value to the Meranaw Society, hence the richness of the archival libraries mentioned.

Penelitian ini merupakan kajian naskah Allaibinengenna Orowane Makkunraiyye (AOM) yang mengkhusus pada satu pasal dalam naskah, pasal tentang tandatanda kematian yang terdiri dari 15 halaman dalam naskah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk untuk menyingkap gambaran tanda-tanda kematian dalam naskah AOM sebagai representasi budaya dan Agama. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif dipadukan dengan metode filologi. Sumber data penelitian ini adalah file digital naskah AOM yang merupakan koleksi Balai Litbang Agama Makassar dengan nomor katalog 02/Akh/BLA-Bon/2015. Adapun teknik-teknik analisis data yang digunakan melalui empat tahap sebagai berikut: Tahap pertama adalah deskripsi kodikologi naskah. Tahap kedua adalah transliterasi teks. Tahap ketiga yakni penerjemahan teks ke bahasa Indonesia. Tahap keempat yakni menjelaskan makna inti sari yang terkandung dalam teks tentang tanda-tanda kematian dalam naskah AOM. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa berdasarkan kajian teks naskah terdapat empat kategori tandatanda kematian dimana keempat kategori tersebut dihubungkan dengan femonena alam sekitar, Sesutu yang dilihat, diamati dan dirasakan melalui anggota tubuh, jejakjejak Nabi dan para khulafaurrasyidin serta empat cahaya di sisi yang merupakan cahaya malaikat. Tanda-tanda kematian yang terdapat dalam naskah ini merupakan kepercayaan sebagian masyarakat Bugis Muslim. Dan tanda-tanda tersebut akan terjadi bagi seseorang jika Allah berkehendak.

Borneo Island is the third largest island in the world, rich in natural resources, biodiversity and cultural diversity. The uniqueness of Borneo is that it is home to three countries; Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam, each with their own valuable cultural heritage. One of the unique aspects of the Borneo archipelago is the shared wealth of civilizations derived from the dissemination of Islam. Treasures known as the “Borneo Islamic Heritage" are not only valuable as cultural artefacts that need to be preserved, but they can also be elevated and commercialised as regional economic drivers. This paper discusses the Idahan manuscript written in Jawi script as one of the treasures of Islamic intellectual legacy in Borneo. The method of study is based on content analysis which depicts the descriptive history of the discovery of the Idahan Jawi manuscript. This manuscript not only serves as evidence of the early embrace of Islam in Sabah, but also as a reference to matters pertaining to religion and the laws of Islamic jurisprudence. This factor leads the Idahan community be considered as the first native people embracing Islam at the east coast of Sabah. The contribution of this study is to enhance understanding of the development of Islamic heritage in Borneo Island and to inculcate the spirit of solidarity among the people living in the region.
