“…According to Liu 1976 as cited in Rokicka (2014), there are as many definitions of quality of life as there are people. However, the simplest and most straight forward definition is that provided by Delibasic et al (2008) who define quality of life as "the degree of wellbeing felt by an individual or group of people".…”

“…Quality of life is influenced by many factors and conditions such as personal and family life, income, employment, working conditions among others (Ruzevicus, 2016). Further, Rokicka (2014) asserts that even though there is no universally accepted definition of quality of life covering all aspects of the phenomenon, this should not be an obstacle preventing its measurement. Albouy, Godefroy, and Lollivier (2012) recommend that, measuring a person's quality of life should entail assessing their situation in terms of several different dimensions such as in material terms, health, housing conditions, insecurity among others then deducing whether they are in a position to have a "satisfactory" quality of life.…”

“…The GDP is calculated using the aggregate expenditure formula as described by the equation, GDP = C + G + I + NX, where C = all private consumptions, or consumer spending in the economy as a whole, G = the sum of all government spending, I = the sum of all the investment, including businesses capital expenditures and NX = the total net exports, calculated as NX = all values of exports -all values of imports. The GDP is calculated quarterly whereas the unemployment rates are calculated monthly and invariable, some corrections are expected for the previous monthly rates as we often see if more data become available (Rokicka, 2013). Inflation is affected by both unemployment and money growth.…”

“…The stimulus to research into the measurement of human development, with man and not income in the centre of attention (human-centred development) in the 90s, was the concept of Amartya Sen. He considered the concept of needs to be related to thinking in terms of what satisfies humans (measured by GDP), rather than what life we can live and actually live (the concept of capabilities) (Rokicka, 2014). "Welfare of a person can be understood as the quality of life…, life is a collection of 'functionings', which can be very diverse, ranging from as elementary as proper nutrition, enjoyment of good health…, to more complex achievementshappiness, sense of dignity, participation in society" (Rokicka, 2014).…”

An important characteristic of the capability approach is its emphasis on individuals' freedom to make decisions for their own development.…”
