The Nigerian oil and gas industry (NOGI) has over time been dominated by the Nigerian government and oil producing companies (OPCs). The influences of the community stakeholder on OPCs in the last three decades have been expressed in diverse ways by different community sub-groups through their concerns and interests, some of which have severely impacted on the NOGI. Community within this context is categorised as a primary stakeholder, while the sub-groups are secondary stakeholders that emerge from within the community. Hence, the success of the NOGI largely depends on the Nigerian government and the oil producing companies, and other players such as Non-Governmental Organisations recognising the community as a key player and having appropriate knowledge of the different sub-groups of secondary stakeholders within the community in order to understand their intentions, behaviour, interests, influences and interrelations. Such knowledge is relevant to the NOGI's formulation of future oil and gas strategy.This study commences with an overview of the primary stakeholders (i.e. the Nigerian government, OPC and the community), their respective activities, participation and the link between these stakeholders with a specific focus on the NOGI context. Subsequently, various sub-groups of secondary stakeholders within the community and their respective interest(s) are identified in detail.

Este artigo se debruça sobre o par analítico poder-causalidade com o objetivo de tecer um comentário sobre as dimensões relacional, discursiva e performática de poder. Cada uma dessas dimensões de poder está enraizada em um diferente entendimento de causalidade social: realista-relacional, disucursiva-hermenêutica, e performática-pragmática. Para os fins de uma análise empírica, será proposto um cruzamento entre esse modelo dimensional e a clássica tipologia das fontes de poder desenvolvida por Michael Mann e outros, para que dessa forma a pesquisa sociológica sobre poder se arme com um aparato conceitual mais sólido e ganhe mais complexidade e efetividade em suas explicações. O exemplo que melhor ilustra o modelo que aqui será debatido é uma imagem retirada da sociologia histórico-comparativa: a Queda da Bastilha e suas causas e consequências. Uma série de questões de pesquisa será levantada no texto com o objetivo de investigar a autonomia relativa do poder performativo. Por último, será esboçada uma aproximação entre o modelo aqui analisado e as teorias sociológicas de poder, incluindo os argumentos de Steven Lukes, Michel Foucault, Pierre Bourdieu, entre outros.

Partnership is increasingly espoused as the best relationship between members of the sustainable development aid chain, and implies a respect for the position of all and a desire to avoid a situation where one group dominates another. It also implies a form of relationship that is not just 'better' for the sake of it but that is more able to help achieve sustainable development. However, given the inevitable inequalities in power between donors that have the resources and fi eld partners that do not it can be hard to put this ideal into practice. This paper explores the function of partnership within a group of closely related institutions that comprise the Catholic Church development chain. The research focussed on three Catholic Church based donors (one from the USA and two from Europe) and their partners in Abuja Ecclesiastical Province, Nigeria. Relationships between and within various strata of the Church in Nigeria were also examined. Relationships were 'patchy' at all levels. One of the donors had a signifi cant operational presence in Nigeria and this was regarded by some respondents as a parallel structure that seriously undermined local bodies. However, while problems existed, there was a sense of inter-dependence arising from a shared sense of values and Catholic Social Teaching, which allowed partners to work through their stresses and confl icts. It is the innate sustainability of the aid chain itself founded upon a set of shared values that provided the space and time for problems to be addressed.
