The concept of ‘nursing’ in the abortion services

Abstract: The ability of participants to care for their clients as individuals illustrates the nature of empowerment of the nurses to attain the goals of the client. Making this support explicit through defined roles for nurses would potentially enable nurses in abortion services to perform their role more effectively at all gestation times.

“…Other research suggests that balancing personal engagement with the family and keeping an emotional distance may enhance the well‐being of nurses in emotional work (Huynh et al., ; Nicholson et al., ; Wolkomir & Powers, ). Gallagher and colleagues () described this as a form of self‐regulation; nurses set boundaries in their care as a way to maintain professionalism while respecting their personal values. Nurses who are experiencing concerns related to moral distress and personal judgments may find these strategies helpful.…”

“…Nurses also identified a need for support that addresses the complex emotional and psychological impact of providing termination care. In previous research, nurses have described the importance of team support in reducing their stress and the need to talk openly with trusted colleagues (Gallagher et al., ; Harris et al., ; Lipp & Fothergill, ; Nicholson et al., ). The findings from these studies reinforce the significance of informal peer support, either from colleagues or others outside of the work environment.…”

“…In particular, public discourses concerning the meaning of abortion (collective symbolic dimension) have implications for how service providers are viewed both by themselves and by others. Research suggests (Gallagher, Porock and Edgley 2010;O'Donnell, Weitz and Freedman 2011) that this will impact both the individual material dimension (the extent to which providers position women as legitimate decision-makers) and the collective material dimension (availability of provision) of reparative justice. In addition, reparative justice regarding abortion is deeply entwined with other health justice issues, including the general functioning of the healthcare system.…”

“…The findings from the present study suggest that further improvements are possible, especially for women who present at the abortion clinic with ongoing PTSD or PTSS. The woman's history is the foundation of consultation, enabling individualisation of care according to different needs 39 . Our results underline the importance of clinical awareness of patients' ongoing mental state for patient-centred care.…”
