Objective: To explore the scope of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its relationship to the major dietary patterns among an urbanised and semi-urbanised Tibetan population in transition from nomadic to settled settings. Design: Cross-sectional. Setting: Community-based. Participants: Urbanised and semi-urbanised Tibetan adults (n 920, aged 18–90 years), who have moved from nomadic to settled living environments, answered questionnaires on food consumption frequency and lifestyle characteristics through structured face-to-face interviews and completed anthropometric measurement and metabolic biomarker tests. Results: MetS prevalence was 30·1 % in males and 32·1 % in females. Low HDL-cholesterol and central obesity were the leading metabolic abnormalities (86·3 and 55·8 %, respectively). Three major dietary patterns – urban, western and pastoral – were identified. Beef/mutton was an important food group for all three identified dietary patterns. In addition, the urban dietary pattern was characterised by frequent consumption of vegetables, tubers/roots and refined carbohydrates; the western pattern was characterised by sweetened drinks, snacks and desserts; and the pastoral pattern featured tsamba (roasted Tibetan barley), Tibetan cheese, butter tea/milk tea and whole-fat dairy foods. Individuals in the highest quintile of urban dietary pattern scores were found to be at a higher risk of developing MetS (OR 2·43, 95 % CI 1·41, 4·18) and central obesity (OR 1·91, 95 % CI 1·16, 3·14) after controlling for potential confounders. Conclusions: MetS was common among urbanised and semi-urbanised Tibetan adult population in transition. The urban dietary pattern, in particular, was a risk factor for MetS. To prevent MetS, nutrition interventions need to be tailored to address the variety of local diet patterns to promote healthy eating.

Background: Novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and subsequent quarantine could raise the risk of food inadequacy and nutrition deficiency crises. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the impacts of COVID-19 on household food security in Jordan, determined the percentage of food security and the levels of food insecurity during the quarantine, determined the associated factor with food insecurity, and determined main food groups associated with FINS during the quarantine. Design: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a Web-based validated questionnaire. The Food Insecurity Experience Scale was used to measure the food insecurity during the first four weeks of the quarantine, and a modified food consumption score was used to determine the number of times the household consumes each food group. Univariate and multiple logistic regression models were used to describe, explore, and predict risk factors correlated with food insecurity among Jordanians, during the first four weeks of the quarantine. Results: A total of 3129 Jordanians had responded to the assessment and fully answered the questionnaire. 23.1% of the total participants were severe food insecure, while 36.1% were moderate food insecure, 40.7% were food secure. The regression model demonstrated the monthly income per capita below the poverty line and a number of the family member (1e4 and 5e7) associated significantly with moderate food insecurity (OR: 5.

Established economic institutions that provide food to the population have different impacts on food security. The contribution and degree of influence vary depending on the type of institutional form that functions in the existing economic conditions. Assessment of impact of institutional forms on food security allows to reveal by means of methods of economic and mathematical analysis the degree of impact of each institution on security and to describe mathematically this dependence. The study developed and tested a methodology that determined the degree of influence of each subject (forms of management) on the level of food supply to the population on the basis of regression analysis. As a result of approbation of the methodology, the final regression model was obtained, which allowed to estimate the degree of influence of agrarian commodity producers' activity on the process of food supply to the population. As a general conclusion, it was determined that the food security of the territories of the Kemerovo Region-Kuzbass is most heavily influenced by personal subsidiary economy of the population, making a significant contribution to the production of basic foodstuffs. on the level of food supply to the population on the basis of regression analysis.
