The concept and determinants of civic engagement

Abstract: Civic engagement plays a prominent role in sustaining a strong civil society and a vibrant democracy. However, it is a complex multidimensional concept, taking multiple forms and encompassing a variety of behaviours and actions related to both political and social aspects. Drawing on the relevant literature the paper attempts to clarify and pinpoint the notion, specifying its dimensions and mapping out its determinants. Then, focusing on university students, it moves to examine youth civic engagement in Greece… Show more

“…Within societal engagement, multiple subtypes are identified. These vary in whose engagement they define and measure, that is, the engagement of citizens (n = 6) (Nicotera et al, 2010;Kemp, 2015;Nguyen et al, 2016;Arvanitidis, 2017;Cortés-Cediel et al, 2018;Pontes et al, 2018) in, for example, their community, politics, or art; the engagement of organizations with citizens (n = 3) (Taylor and Kent, 2014;Sallnow and Paul, 2015;Eder et al, 2018), for example, engagement of research organizations with citizens, or of an end-of-life care service with the community surrounding it; or the engagement of interest groups in policy (n = 1) (Halpin and Fraussen, 2017). Four studies' main aim is to analyze the concept, but an equal number of studies apply the concept to a new area or seek a stakeholder perspective.…”

“…Research on civic engagement and gender has been mixed (Barrett and Brunton‐Smith 2014), while research on age is more consistent: people tend to become more knowledgeable about political issues as they age, and more likely to participate in civil society in ways that are not physically taxing (Arvanitidis 2017; Zukin et al 2006). Models for this study included a dummy variable for whether a farmer is female, and a variable for respondent age in years.…”

“…Strong family ties not only work to assure financial support to their members, but family extended links and networks enhance such dynamics, taking advantage of the clientelistic political practices and rationale that for long have been embedded in the country's institutions. In accordance, practices of civic engagement and forms of civil organisation that represent a horizontal aggregation of interests are less developed, whereas the local state has traditionally been a quite weak and subordinate welfare provider due to lack of resources, powers, and competence (Arvanitidis, 2017;Maloutas, 1988;Maloutas & Economou, 1992). An interesting and rather distinct pole here are the religious institutions which are reported to provide social assistance and support in many Mediterranean countries (Mingione & Oberti, 2003).…”
