The Comprehensive Complication Index (CCI®)

Abstract: The CCI adds information on postoperative morbidity in almost half of the patients developing complications, with particular value following extensive surgery and longer postoperative observation up to 3 months. Each single complication, independently of their inter-connection, should be included in the CCI calculation to best mirror the patients' postoperative morbidity.

“…It also seems to be more responsive to therapy effects and allows a longitudinal assessment of the morbidity. In 2017, they published a prospective study after applying the CCI to their own patients (general surgery) for 1 year [ 23 ]. They could show that patients with a higher Clavien-Dindo score also had more complications overall.…”

“…The Clavien-Dindo classification (CDC) of surgical complications [ 16 ] was used to classify surgical complications. In addition, based on CDC at discharge, the comprehensive complication index (CCI) [ 17 ] was calculated for each patient in order to evaluate the true overall morbidity burden of a procedure.

“…Postoperative morbidity and mortality were defined as any complication or death within 90 days, respectively. Complications were graded according to the Clavien‐Dindo classification system and were scored by the comprehensive complication index (CCI ® ) 19, 20. CCI ® was calculated online by http://www.assessurgery.com.…”
