“…Seven terpene alcohols including 1-octen-3-ol, terpinene-4-ol, linalool and nerolidol were detected which formed 2.35% of P. amboinicus volatiles. Carvacrol has a characteristic pungent spicy-woody odor which contributes to the strong oregano-like aroma [23], and together with the high relative percentages of citrus odor of α-bergamotene [24] and caryophyllene (spicy-woody) [25] collectively contribute to the unique, strong aromatic odor of P. amboinicus. This result is in agreement with the known volatile constituents of P. amboinicus previously reviewed by Arumugam et al [1].…”

“…Our results showed that the essential oils of all three developmental stages have significantly higher antibacterial properties compared to commonly used antibiotics ( p <0.00001) against most of the studied bacteria (more effective than nalidixic acid against five tested bacteria, and more effective than gentamicin against four tested bacteria ( Figure a ). The antibacterial activity is believed to originate from the high abundance of oxygenated monoterpenes as secondary metabolites such as carvacrol in the essential oils of A. tenuifolia . In addition, we witnessed that the antibacterial properties of the vegetative and flowering stages were similar ( p =0.91), as it was expected from their similar chemical compositions.…”

“…We have previously demonstrated that the high concentrations of phenolic compounds including carvacrol in the essential oils of the Thymus genus can lead to antimicrobial properties . Considering the higher abundance of phenolic compounds such as carvacrol in the essential oil of A. tenuifolia , we envisioned that the essential oil may exhibit antibacterial activities.…”

“…In addition, several factors including harvesting time, environmental settings, drying techniques, and essential oil extraction methods, genetic diversity and the developmental stage (Nouri, Baharvand, Raftari, & Deyhimi, 2005;Zarshenas & Krenn, 2015) can also drive such differences. Due to high concentrations of phenolic components such as carvacrol in the essential oils of the thymus genus and its intimate link to antimicrobial properties (Boskovica et al, 2015;Burt, 2004;Khan et al, in press), we envisioned that the essential oils extracted from all three parts of T. fedtschenkoi should demonstrate appreciable antibacterial properties. Therefore, we assessed the antimicrobial properties of the essential oil extracted from T. fedtschenkoi against six gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria and compared to the standard antibiotics, such as gentamicin and nalidixic acid, as tabulated in Table 2.…”
