The objective of this study is to explore the potential of producing energy from open-dump solidwaste from Rajamangala University of Technology Isan Surin Campus. Heating value as well as thephysical and chemical compositions were analyzed. The composition and heating value were comparedto refuse-derived fuel quality standard. All waste samples were separated into combustible and non-com-bustible matter. Paper, plastic, food residue, textiles, rubber and leather were classified as combustible. In excess of ninety-nine (99%) of open dump waste consisted of combustible matteras follows: mixed plastic (45%), textile (19%), food residue (18%), paper (14%), and leather and rubber (3%). Non-combustible composted inert material consisted of only 1% of the open-dump solid waste. Moisture and total solid contents of open-dump solid waste were 51.6% and 48.4% (wet basis) respectively. Volatile matterand ash contents of those were 95.14% and 4.37% (dry basis) respectively. The heating value of the open-dump solid waste was 29 MJ kg-1, which is higher than the refusederived fuel quality standard and re-sults reported in earlier studies [8,10,14]. This indicated the potential of open-dump solid waste to produce refuse-derived fuel (RDF). Therefore, it is possible that energyrecovery through RDF production can be an effective waste management option for Rajamangala University of Technology Isan,Surin Campus. Further study should focus on production of RDF in terms of moisture content removal and compositions of RDF. Furthermore, characteristics of RDF should be determined to explore alter-native sources of renewable energy.

Zusammenfassung Da brennbare Abfälle zumeist ein Gemisch aus biogenen (z. B. Papier, Holz, Küchenabfälle) und fossilen Materialien (Kunststoffe) darstellen, entstehen bei ihrer thermischen Verwertung sowohl klimaneutrale als auch klimarelevante CO2-Emissionen. Analog verhält es sich auch bei der erzeugten Energie (Strom), die entsprechend dem jeweiligen Biomassegehalt des Abfalls zum Teil als erneuerbar eingestuft wird und als solche auch auszuweisen ist. Im Zuge der vorliegenden Studie wurden erstmals auf nationaler Basis die fossilen und biogenen Anteile in thermisch verwerteten Abfällen bestimmt. Die methodische Grundlage dabei bildet die von der Technischen Universität Wien auf europäischer Ebene patentierte Bilanzenmethode. Das Verfahren beruht auf einem mathematischen Abgleich von Materialdaten (z. B. mittlere stoffliche Zusammensetzung biogener und fossiler Materialen) mit messbaren Betriebsgrößen der Verbrennungsanlage (z. B. Reingasmenge, O2und CO2-Konzentration im Reingas, Dampfmenge). Aufgrund einer Anlagenertüchtigung und teils fehlender CO2-Messungen konnten 10 von 13 Abfallverbrennungsanlagen und damit rund 88 % des in österreichischen Müllverbrennungsanlagen verwerteten Abfalls für die Auswertung berücksichtigt werden (rund 2,3 Mio. This article presents an analysis of possibilities for electrical energy production by using municipal solid waste disposed in the biggest Brazilian cities. Currently, the municipal solid waste in Brazil is collected and disposed of at landfills, but there are also other technologies, which in addition to dealing with the garbage can also provide benefits in terms of energy provision. The following scenarios were studied in this work: electricity production from landfill gas (reference scenario); incineration of all municipal solid waste; anaerobic digestion of organic waste and incineration of refuse-derived fuel fractions after being separated in separation plants. According to this study, the biggest cities in Brazil generate about 18.9 million tonnes of municipal solid waste per year (2011), of which 51.5% is biogenic matter. The overall domestic consumption of electricity is 480,120 GWh y(-1) in Brazil and the municipal solid waste incineration in the 16 largest cities in the country could replace 1.8% of it using incinerators. The city of São Paulo could produce 637 GWh y(-1) with landfill gas, 2368 GWh y(-1) with incineration of municipal solid waste and 1177 GWh y(-1) with incineration of refuse-derived fuel. The latter two scenarios could replace 27% and 13.5% of the residential electrical energy consumption in the city. This shows that thermal treatment might be a viable option of waste-to-energy in Brazil.
