The compliance of renal transplant recipients with advice about sun protection measures

Abstract: Renal transplant recipients have an increased risk of developing non-melanoma skin cancer. Ultraviolet radiation is one of the major cofactors in the development of skin cancer in the immunosuppressed. In view of this, we undertook this study to determine the advice given to renal transplant recipients and their compliance with that advice. Two hundred and two renal transplant recipients were interviewed using a questionnaire. Their knowledge about the risk of non-melanoma skin cancer and preventive measures w… Show more

“…Most transplant recipients are adults when they receive their new organs, and have accumulated years of sunlight-related skin damage. Although some patients modify their behavior to use sunscreen and stay out of the sun, most do not (62)(63)(64). We therefore used the hairless mouse model of posttransplantation skin cancer to study the effects of specific immunosuppression regimes on UVB-induced inflammation and to mimic both previous and ongoing sun exposure of adult transplant patients.…”

“…Transplant recipients who limit their exposure to ultraviolet radiation may reduce their risk of developing skin cancer. The data herein, together with recent reports by others, indicate the inadequate use of sun protection among transplant recipients (18)(19)(20). This is most concerning in those patients at greatest risk to develop skin cancer, including those with light skin, advanced age and those with a history of significant past sun exposure.…”

“…The similar patterns of sun protection use within the general population compared to the transplant population suggest that the majority of transplant patients do not appreciate the need for extra precautions to protect against UVR exposure (18,(21)(22)(23)29). This knowledge deficiency may persist because of a failure of information to be transferred from members of the transplant team to the patient.…”

“…The risk of metastasis is also high in skin cancers of these patients. 7,9,10 Drug-related lesions including hypertrichosis, gingival hyperplasia, acneiform fungal culture were done where indicated, after informed consent.…”
