The Complexity of Living with Hepatitis C

Abstract: Newman's theory of health as expanding consciousness was used to explore the patterns and their meaning for people living with chronic hepatitis C. A hermeneutic dialectic method was used to engage nine participants who had been diagnosed with hepatitis C. Patterns and themes were identified and included struggling to overcome, transcending the illness, and wanting to give back. Despite their struggles, all participants moved on to a higher level of consciousness through transformative changes in their lives.

“…The studies were published between 1999 [39] and 2014 [40, 48]. Data in these studies were analyzed using a variety of methods, including thematic and content analysis [2123, 27, 45, 48, 56, 60, 64], inductive approach [28, 54, 57, 59], grounded theory [30, 32, 35, 46, 63], framework approach [61], phenomenological approach [31, 37, 40, 43, 51, 52, 66], interpretive approach [33, 39], and constant comparative analysis [41, 50]. Various software programs were used by these studies: NVivo [28, 29, 47, 48, 55, 62], atlas.ti [2123, 26], and QSR ∗ NUDIST [41].…”

“…The informational pattern informed nurses of the need for interviews beyond the number that was initially anticipated and/or beyond the expected length (Endo, et al, 2005;Falkenstern, et al, 2009;Kiser-Larson, 2002). Some Newman scholars looking across their participants used the relationship to illuminate the nature of participants' insights (Endo, et al, 2005;Kiser-Larson, 2002;Lamendola & Newman, 1994;Litchfield, 1999;Rosa, 2006) and turning points (MacNeil, 2012;Neill, 2005;Rosa, 2006). Yet found that when "families started to recall past meaningful events with their special needs child, they did not want to stop until they felt they were finished" prolonging some meetings to two and half hours (Falkenstern, et al, 2009, p. 269).…”

“…It was the moving beyond that represents humanness and resilience, and for that, each participant is thanked" (MacNeil, 2012). It was the moving beyond that represents humanness and resilience, and for that, each participant is thanked" (MacNeil, 2012).…”

“…The scientific evidence for the relevance or acceptance by the nursing community is mainly provided by studies that make use of the theory in different parts of the research process. The most frequent use of the theory is that it has a function as a theoretical framework for the study [7,9,10] . This type of scientific evidence is estimated to confirm the relevance of nursing practice but it is most important not to claim incorrectly that the theory has been empirically evaluated per se.…”
