The Complex Reality of VO2 Kinetics to Steady State: Reassessment of the Models Used to Quantify and Interpret VO2 Kinetics, Steady State, and Time to Steady State

Abstract

The study of oxygen uptake (V O2) kinetics is the study of the physiology of the V O2 response to exercise, and subsequent recovery (although, this Thesis will focus on the exercise response). Research in V O2 kinetics is a valuable method to better understand athletic development and performance, components of cardiovascular disease, and human physiology. There has been a great deal of study in V O2 kinetics as they apply to exercise transitions to a new homeostatic steady state. Over the years, this research has been conducted using a variety of exercise modalities, as well as incorporating multiple methods of data collection and processing. Despite research efforts that extend more than a century, there is still disagreement in the physiological science and data handling methods of the discipline. Recent literature has discussed inadequacies associated with current methods of data processing.
