To address the issues of high axial force and slow cutting speed in traditional rock drilling, this paper proposes a longitudinal-torsional coupled vibration assisted rock drilling scheme. Theoretical modeling of rock drilling under longitudinal-torsional coupled vibration assistance is presented, followed by finite element simulations of traditional drilling, longitudinal vibration drilling, torsional vibration drilling, and longitudinal-torsional coupled vibration drilling. Results show that longitudinal-torsional coupled vibration drilling reduces the maximum axial force by 36.32% and increases the drilling speed by 36.28% compared to traditional drilling. Experimental validation shows a reduction in strain of the drill bit support by 35.48% and a 31.25% increase in drilling speed during longitudinal-torsional coupled vibration drilling compared to torsional vibration drilling. Study demonstrates that longitudinal-torsional coupled vibration drilling is a more efficient method for rock drilling than other methods.

This paper presents a numerical method for studying the stress–strain state and obtaining the nonlinear elastic characteristics of longitudinal–transverse transducers. The authors propose a mathematical model that uses a direct numerical solution of the boundary value problem based on the plain curved rod equations in Matlab. The system’s stress–strain state and nonlinear elastic characteristic are obtained using the method of successive loadings based on the curved rod’s linearized equations. For most ultrasonic instruments, the operating frequency of ultrasonic vibrations is close to 20 kHz. On the other hand, the received own oscillation frequencies are close to the working range. Using the method of successive loadings in the mathematical complex Matlab, a numerical calculation of the stress–strain state of a flat, curved rod at large displacements has been carried out. The proposed model can be considered an initial approximation to the solution of the spatial problem of the longitudinal–torsional transducer.

A radial cascaded composite ultrasonic transducer is analyzed. The transducer consists of three short metal tubes and two radially polarized piezoelectric ceramic short tubes arranged alternately along the radial direction. The short metal tubes and the piezoelectric ceramic short tubes are connected in parallel electrically and in series mechanically, which can multiply the input sound power and sound intensity. Based on the theory of plane stress, the electro-mechanical equivalent circuit of radial vibration of the transducer is derived firstly. The resonance/anti-resonance frequency equation and the expression of the effective electromechanical coupling coefficient are obtained. Excellent electromechanical characteristics are determined by changing the radial geometric dimensions. Two prototypes of the transducers are designed and manufactured to support the analytical theory. It is concluded that the theoretical resonance/anti-resonance frequencies are consistent with the numerical and experimental results. When R 2 is at certain values, both the anti-resonance frequency and effective electromechanical coupling coefficient corresponding to the second mode have maximal values. The radial cascaded composite ultrasonic transducer is expected to be used in the fields of ultrasonic water treatment and underwater acoustics.
