The complete mitochondrial genome of the sea urchin, Echinometra sp. EZ

Abstract: The complete mitogenome of Echinometra sp. EZ has been described and fully annotated in this study. Phylogenetic analysis of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) from six Echinometra species confirms that our sample is E. sp. EZ. The mitogenome is 15,698 bp in length and contains 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNAs, 2 rRNAs, and a non-coding region with an identical organization to other Echinoidea. The E. sp. EZ mitogenome shared 99.1% identity to the published Echinometra mathaei mitogenome, differing by 147 S… Show more

“…RESL and bPTP were the only methods to split Echinometra mathaei in three or more putative species. This is in accordance with the distinct species identified within Echinometra mathaei using ecological distribution, test morphology, gonadal spicules, gametes and cross-fertilization experiments (6064). These cases show the difficulty to interpret the different species delimitation methods in absence of additional lines of evidence and when distances among species are relatively small.…”

“…First, adult Echinometra sp. EZ (Ketchum, DeBiasse et al, 2018) were sampled in August 2017 and February 2018 from six sites along the Arabian Peninsula (Table S1, Supporting Information) for a total of 183 samples (Figure 1). This dataset is referred to as the "summer-winter spatial series."…”
