The complete mitochondrial genome and phylogenetic analysis of Coscinodiscus wailesii (Coscinodiscophyceae, Bacillariophyta)

Abstract: Coscinodiscus is a species-rich genus with about 400 species described, many of which are harmful algal bloom species with significant negative ecological impact. Despite of their importance in primary production and as harmful algal bloom species, genome data for species in this genus is limited. No mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) of any species in this genus has been reported. Here, the complete mtDNA sequence of the Coscinodiscus wailesii Gran & Angst 1931 was constructed and analyzed. The circular mtDNA was 3… Show more

“…According to Van Landingham (1968), approximately 400 Cosinodiscus species names are properly published with priority. Coscinodiscus (Coscinodiscophyceae, Bacillariophyta) is a species-rich genus with 174 taxonomically accepted species, among which 49 species have been identified in various coastal regions in China (Huang, et al,2021). Some Coscinodiscus species can form red tides that may cause serious damage to aquaculture through competitive utilization of nutrients or by causing extensive clogging of fishing nets and other equipment (Tetsuya et al,2000;Nishikawa et al,2010) and can cause hypoxia and bring substantial losses to fishery by generating a large amount of sediments (Laing and Gollasch, 2022).…”

“…Diatoms are the most species-rich group of algae, with more than 200,000 estimated species, contributing up to 20% of global primary productivity [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. Coscinodiscus (Coscinodiscophyceae, Bacillariophyta) is a species-rich genus with 174 taxonomically accepted species (Guiry and Guiry 2022), among which 49 species have been identified in various coastal regions in China [ 4 ]. Some Coscinodiscus species can form red tides that may cause serious damage to aquaculture through competitive utilization of nutrients or by causing extensive clogging of fishing nets and other equipment [ 5 , 6 ] and can cause hypoxia and bring substantial losses to fishery by generating a large amount of sediments [ 7 ].…”

“…The mtDNAs of Mediophyceae and Coscinodiscophyceae each formed a paraphyletic assemblage ( Figure 1(A) ). Coscinodiscus granii (MW435847) was found sister to C. wailesii (Huang et al 2021 ) in a highly supported clade ( Figure 1(A) ). Comparative analysis of mtDNAs revealed many rearrangement events.…”
