The complete mitochondrial DNA sequence of Hansenula wingei reveals new characteristics of yeast mitochondria

Abstract: The complete 27,694-bp mitochondrial (mt) DNA sequence of Hansenula wingei, which is a typical budding yeast and contains circular mitochondrial DNA, has been determined. The mt sequence contains genes encoding large and small ribosomal RNAs, 25 tRNAs, three subunits of cytochrome c oxidase (subunits 1, 2 and 3), three subunits of ATPase (subunits 6, 8 and 9), apocytochrome b, seven subunits of NADH dehydrogenase (subunits 1, 2, 3, 4, 4L, 5 and 6), and a ribosomal protein, VAR1. The VAR1 gene is considered to … Show more

“…Significant CRI and CRV matches turned up for the three known rnpB genes in S. cerevisiae , S. castellii (Petersen et al 2002), and A. nidulans (Lee et al 1996a), and four new candidates emerged in Pichia canadensis (Sekito et al 1995), Schizosaccharomyces pombe (Lang et al 1983), Schizosaccharomyces octosporus (Bullerwell et al 2003b), and Taphrina deformans, a fungus classified within Archiascomycota (or Taphrinomycetales, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information [NCBI] nomenclature). Sequence alignments are shown in Figure 1.…”

“…This type of mtDNA architecture is now referred to as a circular-mapping mitochondrial genome (Jacobs et al 1996). The mitochondrial genomes of several yeast species have been sequenced completely (Lang 1984;Sekito et al 1995;Foury et al 1998;Kerscher et al 2001;Petersen et al 2002;Bullerwell et al 2003;Koszul et al 2003;Langkjaer et al 2003;Jones et al 2004) and presumably have similar structures. In contrast, the molecular architecture of the mtDNA of the petite negative yeast Candida parapsilosis is quite different.…”
