Essential oils of Magnolia balansae A. DC. growing wild in Son La (leaf, twig and fruit) and Phu Tho (fruit) provinces of Vietnam were obtained by hydrodistillation and were analyzed using GC/MS-FID. From 30 to 49 compounds were identified accounting for 66.1–80.0% of the oils. Spathulenol (33.9%, 20.7%, and 11.2%), and caryophyllene oxide (10.0%, 10.1%, and 9.3%) were the main components of leaf, twig and fruit oils of M. balansae, respectively, from Son La province. Linalool (13.8%) was also the main component of fruit oil. While, in the fruit oil of M. balansae from Phu Tho province, cis-β-elemene (10.4%) was the sole main component. The antimicrobial activity of the oils was tested against 3 microorganism strains using an agar disk diffusion method with inhibitory zone diameters ranging from 13.5 to 40 mm. IC50 and MIC of the M. balansae oils were determined using a microdilution broth susceptibility assay against 7 microorganism strains. Among them, Bacillus subtilis had the highest sensitivity with IC50 values (ranging from 57.0 to 82.0 µg/mL) and MIC value (512 µg/mL). This is the first study on the chemical composition of essential oils of M. balansae and their antimicrobial activity.

Manglietia ventii is a highly ornamental timber tree species that is listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List. This study was conducted on the complete chloroplast genome of M. ventii. The length of the chloroplast genome is 159,950 bp with GC content as 39.3%. One hundred and thirty-one functional genes were identified in the genome, which included 86 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 37 tRNA genes, and eight rRNA genes. The phylogenetic analysis indicated that M. ventii is most closely related to M. megaphylla and M. aromatica , and the study provides new insights into the evolution of the Magnoliaceae.

Background and Objective: The use of organic fertilizers is an agricultural practice that enhances soil fertility and plant quality. This study reported the influences of fertilizers on the yield of watermelons. Materials and Methods: Field experiments were conducted to assess the impacts of mineral fertilizers, organic fertilizer (Sawdust Compost, SDC) and their combinations on two varieties of watermelon during early and late raining season and under irrigation in Ogun-Osun River Basin Project Site Sepeteri, Oyo-State. Plants without mineral or organic fertilizers served as control treatments. All experiments were arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Data collected, which included Crop Growth Rate (CGR), Relative Growth Rate (RGR), Net Assimilate Ratio (NAR), dry matter weight, fruit yield and plant nutrient uptake, were subjected to analysis of variance at a 5% level. Results: The results showed significant differences (p<0.05) for all the treatments tested when compared to the control. The highest value of CGR (39.86/plant) was obtained between 6-8 weeks with Kaolack variety fertilized with 13.2 t haG 1 SDC during the late raining season. Kaolack fertilized with 13.2 t haG 1 SDC during the early raining season produced the highest dry matter weight with the value of 88.81 g/plant. The highest mean fruit weight and fruit yield of 5.05 kg and 98.96 t haG 1 respectively were recorded with Kaolack fertilized with 13.2 t haG 1 SDC under irrigation. Conclusion: It is concluded that Kaolack watermelon variety fertilized at 13.2 t haG 1 SDC fertilizer under irrigation is recommended for high fruit yields.
