The comparison of the collagen fiber contents and hepatic stellate cell distribution in male and female chicken livers

Abstract: The difference in collagen fiber content, morphological properties and hepatic stellate cell (HSC) distribution was investigated in the liver of both sexes in chicken. Collagen fiber specimens were obtained by maceration treatment with NaOH solution. HSCs were detected using desmin-specific immunohistochemistry. The ratio of liver weight to body weight was larger in the female than the male chickens. Collagen fiber content, the numerical density of HSCs and the percentage area displaying desmin immunopositivit… Show more

“…In our previous study, the liver‐to‐body weight ratio was significantly higher in the pullets compared with that of cockerels. However, the percentage of collagen fiber to fresh tissue weight was higher in cockerels compared with that of pullets (Nishimura et al . 2011).…”

“…This sex‐dependent variation between the areas of HSCs corresponded to the occurrence of the collagen fiber content difference between sexes. It has been suggested that collagen fiber content relates to the proportion of HSC area in the liver tissue of the adult chicken (Nishimura et al . 2011) and the current study proposed that a sex‐dependent variation in collagen fiber content may occur at 8 weeks.…”

“…Our previous study indicated that the density of HSCs and the collagen fiber weight in the adult chicken liver are higher in males than in females (Nishimura et al . ), and these differences appear until 8 weeks of age (Nishimura et al . ).…”
