The comparative morphology of pit organs in elasmobranchs

Abstract: The pit organs of elasmobranchs (sharks, skates and rays) are free neuromasts of the mechanosensory lateral line system. Pit organs, however, appear to have some structural differences from the free neuromasts of bony fishes and amphibians. In this study, the morphology of pit organs was investigated by scanning electron microscopy in six shark and three ray species. In each species, pit organs contained typical lateral line hair cells with apical stereovilli of different lengths arranged in an "organ-pipe" co… Show more

“…A direct relationship between the cutaneous sensory system of modern elasmobranchs and surrounding dermal denticles was described by several authors (e.g. Budker 1938;Reif 1985;Peach and Marshall 2009). This concerns the superficial neuromasts (pit organs), which are (together with the canal neuromasts) one of the two main types of mechanoreceptor organs of the lateral line system (McKenzie et al 2014;Webb 2014).…”

“…3C). Even though the feature cannot be specifically identified from superficial examination, some of the pit organ components in rays can be set on small protuberances (Peach & Marshall 2009;Klimley 2013). If the modified denticle supports pit organ components, the surrounding dermal denticles are not arranged in a pattern typically associated with external pit organs.…”

“…If the modified denticle supports pit organ components, the surrounding dermal denticles are not arranged in a pattern typically associated with external pit organs. Peach (2003) and Peach & Marshall (2009) described external pit organ denticle patterns on a rostral-caudal axis as opposed to the radiating arrangement found on the Gulf of Mexico Mollisquama; a histological examination is required for assessing the modified denticle's properties (J. Marshall, pers. comm.…”

“…Neuromasts are categorized on the basis of their location and may occur over the surface of the skin or lining canals. Epidermal neuromasts extend their cupulae into the surrounding water and emanate from a pit surrounded by denticles (termed pit organs) [Maruska, 2001;Peach and Marshall, 2009]. Canal neuromasts are enclosed in fluid-filled canals embedded within the skin or cartilage [Jordan, 2008;Jordan et al, 2009].…”
