Although science journalists’ selection criteria have been investigated, there have not been systematic attempts yet to study how this varies across countries. Using gatekeeping theory, we analyzed and compared how three groups of journalists in Argentina, France, and Germany selected their news, and explored some motivations behind their decisions. Personal interests as well as a set of common news factors and sources are important for all journalists, while the journalists differ regarding professional role conceptions, the influence of their organizations, and perceived importance of audience perceptions. More research is needed to unravel science news selection criteria across different journalistic cultures.

Citizens increasingly use online platforms, and in particular YouTube, to get informed. This paper addresses the role of YouTube’s recommendation system in science communication to assess whether YouTube's recommendation system is creating filter bubbles on the climate change issue. It, therefore, contributes to the growing literature that finds that such filter bubbles actually do not exist. The paper shows that users are likely to get content with similar opinions, at least for a few recommended videos in a row. In addition, it was observed that the same promoters of climate denial appear over and over again in different recommendations. Given all that, YouTube can lead to the creation of filter bubbles where users do not have access to all relevant scientific information.

Estudar e avaliar os impactos e potencialidades de ações de educação não formal e de comunicação pública da ciência para o processo de alfabetização científica (AC) é relevante e necessário, porém, são poucos estudos que têm se dedicado a isso de forma criteriosa. No presente artigo, apresentamos a ferramenta tórico-metodológica “Indicadores de Alfabetização Científica”, criada para a análise do processo de AC nesses contextos e apresentamos alguns resultados de pesquisas que a utilizaram. Trazemos, inicialmente, uma breve revisão da literatura sobre a AC, explorando autores que abordam o tema nos contextos formais e não formais de educação e de comunicação pública da ciência. A partir deste panorama, detalhamos a ferramenta elaborada para análise de ações e do público, discutindo seu processo de construção. Em seguida, apresentamos um conjunto de investigações que utilizou a ferramenta proposta. Por fim, apontamos que a ferramenta teórico-metodológica é útil para um diagnóstico que pode revelar a extensão do desenvolvimento da alfabetização científica e discutimos alguns dos desafios no seu uso e desenvolvimento.
