In order to achieve reliable data regarding high temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cell (HT-PEFC) electrode degradation novel diagnostic techniques for the determination of the electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) were developed. Cyclovoltammetric CO-monolayer oxidation (CO stripping) charge measurements were combined with real-time CO 2 exhaust gas analysis. Different evaluating methods were developed to overcome the problem of side reactions during CO stripping. Furthermore, a calibration curve for absolute ECSA determination via CO stripping was established, eliminating the temperature dependency of CO adsorption. In addition, these methods were successfully extended and implemented to locally resolved ECSA measurements. In summary, this paper introduces novel fundamental HT-PEFC electrode diagnostics for improved understanding of degradation phenomena.

With especial regard to hydrogen electrode, the theoretical fundamentals of electrode potential, the most important reference electrodes and the electrode potential measurement have been discussed. In the case of the hydrogen electrode, it have been emphasised that there is no equilibrium between the hydrogen molecule (H 2 ) and the hydrogen (H + ), hydronium (H 3 O + ) ion in the absence of a suitable catalyst. Taking into account the practical aspects as well, the theorectical basis of working of hydrogen, copper-copper sulphate, mercury-mercurous halide, silver-silver halide, metal-metal oxide, metal-metal sulphate and "Thalamid" electrodes, has been discussed.

Fuel cell catalysis has many similarities to normal heterogeneous catalysis, with the important exception that it often takes place in the aggressive environment of an electrolyte, which may be a strong acid, a strong alkali, or a fused salt. Additionally electrons are either added to or removed by external means during the reaction processes. The current state of the art in a variety of fuel cell systems is reviewed, and areas of catalysis in which further progess is needed before widespread commercial use is achieved are identified.
