The common causes of rework in construction contracts: a diagnostic approach

Abstract: Purpose The high rate of rework that occurs in construction projects has a negative effect on the performance of the construction projects. Although several mechanisms have been implemented to control reworking, a comprehensive list of rework causes is yet to be provided to present the common causes that contribute to rework in construction contracts. This paper aims to investigate the most common rework causes that need to be addressed in construction contracts. Design/methodology/approach A mixed-method us… Show more

“…Grouping the similar rework root causes is necessary to understand the interdependency of causes and avoid duplications (Siraj and Robinson, 2019). The selected five categories in this paper are align with five group of rework causes in previous studies (Asadi et al, 2021a;Asadi et al, 2022). The category names in the proposed model were adjusted precisely to cover all identified categories in Table 1.…”

“…Contract as the main output of the procurement stage has been studied under different situations (Mendis et al, 2015;El-adaway et al, 2016). Non-etheless, the assessment of rework in contract documents needs further investigation as literature shows the lack of addressing rework in the contracts, which results in contractual claims and disputes (Wang et al, 2019;Asadi et al, 2021a). Thus, identifying the main causes of rework in construction contracts is considered as the key objective for this study followed by proposing a classification model.…”

“…There is a number of factors which hamper construction quality of buildings, these include the fact: site management has insu cient time for quality management, insu cient information provided by consultants restricted the contractor's ability to achieve quality, quality performance measure was considered low priority among the project stakeholders, a lack of architect involvement in the project hindered quality achievements (Asadi, Wilkinson, & Rotimi, 2021;Tilley, 2005).…”

“…Several factors hamper the construction quality of buildings; these include the fact that the site management has not been allocated sufficient time for quality management, which the consultants provide. Consequently, time limitation has restricted the contractor's ability to achieve quality; among the project stakeholders, a low priority is given to quality performance measures, and the scarce involvement of the architect in the project has also hindered quality achievements (Asadi, Wilkinson, & Rotimi, 2021;Tilley, 2005).…”
