Abstract:Gibberellin A4A7 (GA4-7) and benzyladenine (BA) were applied to ‘Starkrimson Delicious’ apples from 1969 through 1972. In initial tests, GA4-7 + BA (50 to 200 ppm each) increased fruit length, fruit wt and length/diam ratio (L/D) but did not alter diam or fruit color. Firmness and seed numbers were reduced only at 200 ppm. At concn above 50 ppm flower initiation was substantially reduced. Concentrations of 25 ppm were as effective as 50 ppm but concentrations below 25 ppm were not effective. To be most effecti… Show more
“…Fruit weight was increased in the absence of thinning when either GA4 + 7 or B A ^e re applied starting at FB + 11 days but not when used in combination (Table 3). Sprays of GA4 + 7 and BA can increase fruit weight of 'Delicious' primarily by elongation of the calyx end, and maximum response appears to be when applied during the bloom period (23). However, Looney (14) has reported that treatments on 'Spartan' with GA4 + 7 and BA increased the L/D ratio and especially fruit weight for at least 5 weeks after bloom.…”
Five repeat spray applications at full bloom (FB) + 11 days through FB + 61 days of 50 ppm 6-benzylamino purine (BA) and/or gibberellins A4+7 (GA4+7) were made on limbs receiving 0 or 2000 ppm butanedioic acid mono-(2,2-dimethylhydrazide) (daminozide) at FB + 11 days. Similar repeat applications of BA and GA4+7 were made at FB + 4 through FB + 57 days on limbs where all blossom clusters were removed at FB or all blossom clusters were retained. GA4+7 depressed flower bud formation, whereas BA not only increased bloom but also overcame some of the inhibitory effects of GA4+7 on flowering. The daminozide and BA combination increased flowering more than when each was applied separately. BA increased lateral flower development in the blossom cluster and increased the number of “king” flowers surviving several mid-April freezes. Russeting was increased by BA, decreased by GA4+7, and unaffected when BA and GA4+7 were combined. BA increased fruit weight, length, and diameter when treatments were started at FB + 4 days. GA4+7 increased fruit length but fruit weight was increased only when treatments were started at FB + 11 days. GA4+7 decreased seed number, and when combined with BA, seed number was reduced even further.

“…Reports of increased fruit weight following GA4 + 7 + BA application (8,11) were not confirmed here (Tables 2 and 3). This may be due in part to the GA4 + 7 + BA concentrations used in this study, which were generally above those which are recommended commercially.…”

“…Also, Miller (8) has reported that geographical location can modify the response to GA4 + 7 + BA. GA4 + 7 + BA increases fruit size in the warmer regions of the United States such as North Carolina (11) and Georgia (8), but confirmation in northern states is lacking. Looney reported that GA4 + 7 + BA increased the size of 'Spartan' apples in British Columbia but the response occurred only when applications were made a week or more after bloom (7).…”

“…Increased L/D ratio was due to a combination of increased fruit length and decreased fruit diameter. Reduced fruit diameter and weight were attributed to a lower seed number.A proprietory formulation of GA4 +7 + BA (Promalin; Abbott Laboratory, North Chicago, IL 60064) is applied commercially to 'Delicious' apples during the bloom period to elongate fruit and increase fruit weight (8,9,11). In the Northeast, increased length/diameter (L/D) ratio has been observed but the response often is less than expected.…”

The greatest increase in length to diameter (L/D) ratio of apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) following microdroplet application of gibberellins A4+7 plus 6-benzylamino purine (GA4+7 + BA) occurred when this mixture was applied in the calyx or on the receptacle surface. Movement of GA4+7 + BA to the receptacle from surrounding flower parts or spur leaves was limited. No GA4+7 + BA treatment of 25-600 ppm (0.625-15 μg GA4+7 + BA/flower) influenced fruit set or increased fruit weight. Increased L/D ratio was due to a combination of increased fruit length and decreased fruit diameter. Reduced fruit diameter and weight were attributed to a lower seed number.
The arrival of new plant growth regulators on the market in the early 1990s, especially synthetic ones, is in a static state. Many growth regulators continue to be used experimentally, but the transition to approved usage is being delayed for several reasons. On the financial side, a number of mergers, buy‐outs, and other dispositions of chemical companies has led to a decrease in the number of commercial compounds available. Moreover, the cost of registration has prompted some producers to withdraw chemicals from the market. Some older plant growth regulators have undergone several trade name changes, adding confusion to the field.
The ideal plant growth regulator should leave no harmful persistent residue in a finished product or crop and the paradigm compounds are ones that have high specific activity, are target specific, and are environmentally biodegradable. The most acceptable growth regulators appear to be those compounds that already occur in nature and elicit certain desirable responses in economic crops.
