The combined effect of green tea and α-glucosyl hesperidin in preventing obesity: a randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial

Abstract: Green tea, a widely consumed beverage in Asia, contains green tea catechins effective against obesity, especially epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate (EGCG), but must be consumed in an impractically huge amount daily to elicit its biological effect. Meanwhile, citrus polyphenols have various physiological effects that could enhance EGCG functionality. Here we investigated the antiobesity effect of a combination of EGCG and α-glucosyl hesperidin, a citrus polyphenol, at doses that have not been previously reported to … Show more

“…A significant number of clinical trials have been conducted on the EGCG polyphenolic flavonoid component of green tea. An examination of a selection of these trials [ 265 , 276 , 277 , 278 , 279 , 280 , 281 , 282 , 283 , 284 , 285 ] amply demonstrate the diverse biological properties of EGCG and its potential therapeutic applications. EGCG can potentially improve cognition in children with Down syndrome [ 276 ].…”

“…EGCG prevents skin dermatitis in skin cancer patients receiving radiotherapy [ 277 ], and topical application of EGCG improves the treatment of vitilago [ 278 ]. EGCG improves surgical skin scarring reducing mast cell numbers, improving blood flow, angiogenesis and the elastin content of skin samples (ISRCTN70155584) [ 282 ]. In an international standard randomized controlled trial (registration number ISRCTN 18643079), EGCG improved scar repair, scar thickness, hydration, and elasticity [ 280 ].…”

“…For instance, the lipid metabolismimproving effects of fish oil and taurine have been reported as an example of the combined effects of functional food ingredients 36) . Additionally, the anti-obesity effects of green tea catechins are enhanced when combined with citrus polyphenols 37,38) . Consistent with these studies, our study demonstrated a strong anti-obesity effect of the combination of fish oil and βCG.…”

“…Clinical trials were conducted on healthy individuals aged 30-75 years who consumed green tea in combination with glucosyl hesperidin (GT gH), which contained 178 mg glucosyl hesperidin and 146 mg epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), for 12 weeks. The results showed that GT gH prevented the addition of body weight, and the antiobesity effect of GT gH is more pronounced in people < 50 years old [73].…”
