“…In our experience and from a practical point of view, TACE and PEI are not mutually exclusive and can be successfully combined (Tanaka et al, 1992;Koda et al, 1994;Bartolozzi et al, 1995). We observed superior survival rates only in patients receiving the combination of TACE and PEI after adjustment for prognostic imbalances in multivariate analyses (Fig.…”

“…Furthermore, other authors have reported the superiority of combined TACE-PEI therapy compared with TACE therapy alone. 20,22 However, those studies investigated the effectiveness of combination TACE-PEI therapy for patients with large HCC lesions (Ͼ 3 cm in greatest dimension). The current study is the first randomized study to examine the effectiveness of combined TACE-PEI therapy for patients with small HCC lesions (Ͻ 3 cm in greatest dimension).…”

“…The present study shows a beneficial result of cirrhotic patients with HCC ≤5 cm after PEI, whereas the effect was less beneficial in patients with HCC >3 cm, multiple tumours or in Child's class C. This result concurred with other reports, 7,8,16,18 irrespective of there being more patients in Child's class B than in Child's class A in our series. This result likewise suggests that additional treatment, such as TACE, 19‐23 may be necessary to improve the survival for patient with multiple tumours and tumours >3 cm.…”
