The Combination of Soy Isoflavones and Resveratrol Preserve Bone Mineral Density in Hindlimb-Unloaded Mice

Abstract: It is well known that physical inactivity during space flight or prolonged bed rest causes rapid bone loss. Soy isoflavones (ISOs) and resveratrol (RES) have been reported to be useful to maintain a positive balance for bone turnover. Therefore, we examined the combined effects of ISO and RES on bone loss that was induced by hindlimb-unloading in mice. Female eight-week-old ddY mice were divided into the following six groups (n = 6–8 each): normally housed mice, loading mice, hindlimb-unloading (UL) mi… Show more

“…In conclusion, the safety and efficiency of natural compounds have received attention in various diseases, including bone diseases [ 53 , 54 , 55 , 56 , 57 ]. Diet is also important in preventing the risk of osteoporosis and treating patients with osteoporosis [ 58 , 59 , 60 ]. In particular, isoflavone-rich cowpea has been reported to increase the proliferation and differentiation of human osteoblasts through the activation of the BMP2 pathway.…”

“…Isoflavones stimulate the activity and proliferation of osteoblasts [47] and inhibit bone resorption [26]. Isoflavones prevent bone resorption [58,59]. Isoflavones contribute to calcium homeostasis [70], and probiotic modulates the transcellular and paracellular pathways [46].…”

“…Furthermore, Tousen and colleagues [59] tested the combined effects of soy isoflavones (ISOs) and resveratrol (RES) on bone loss that was induced by hindlimb-unloading in mice. Female mice (ddY strain, 8 weeks) were randomly divided into six body weight-matched groups: a normally housed group (n = 6), a loading group (n = 6), a hindlimb-unloading group of mice that were fed a control diet (n = 6), aa hindlimb-unloading group of mice that were fed a 0.16% ISO conjugate diet (n = 8), a hindlimb-unloading group of mice that were fed a 0.15% RES diet (n = 8), and a hindlimb-unloading group of mice that were fed a 0.16% ISO conjugate and RES diet (n = 8).…”

“…A soy-based diet that contain isoflavones such as soy milk and Tofu is thought to contain estrogen-like compounds that may help inhibit bone loss and prevent osteoporosis because estrogen hormones help protect bone loss against postmenopausal osteoporosis [58]. It was reported that the combination of soy isoflavones and milk basic protein preserves bone mineral density, and the combination of resveratrol which is found in red wine, red grape skins, and peanuts also prevents bone loss [59,60]. In the present study, we demonstrated that PASI promotes osteoblast differentiation and mineralization.…”
