The collisional knot in Liguria

Show more

“…12B). This tectonic junction (i.e., the "Ligurian knot" of Laubscher et al 1992;Schumacher and Laubscher, 1996) results in a complex tectonic jigsaw (Figs. 1A, 2 and 12B) including the buried metamorphic Western Alpine units, the SE-verging front of the South Alpine thrust system (i.e., Adria Units), and the northeast-verging External Ligurian Units of the Northern Apennines (i.e., the outer part of the Apenninic prowedge) (see, e.g.…”

In the northwestern sector of the studied area (Monferrato and Torino Hill), the SE-ward migration of the South Alpine thrust system is recorded within the upper Eocene -Oligocene succession (Festa et al 2005(Festa et al , 2009Mosca et al 2010).…”

“…In the Oligocene-Miocene time interval the anticlockwise rotation of the Corsica-Sardinia Block with respect to Eurasia and the related opening of the Ligurian-Provençal Basin gave rise to the oroclinal bending of the Ligurian Alps (Tapponier 1977;Laubscher et al 1992) that were forced to migrate towards E-NE. The resulting tectonic structures achieve the backfolding and backthrusting at the onset of the Apennine stacking and were produced due to the onset of E-W to NE-SW shortening directions .…”

“…Several authors have discussed the structural setting of the Alps -Apennine link (Bozzo et al 1992;Laubscher et al 1992;Miletto and Polino 1992); however, as it is poorly exposed and masked by the TPB deposits, many of these papers have addressed this problem by means of geophysical methods. Miletto and Polino (1992) proposed a gravity model, constructed by combining geological data and several geophysical methods.…”
