The Coital Alignment Technique (CAT): An Overview of Studies

Abstract: The Coital Alignment Technique (CAT), a basic physiological alignment that provides consistent and effective stimulation for female coital orgasm, has been evaluated in a series of controlled studies. An overview of the CAT is discussed as well as related studies including replication studies, and subsequent studies of Orgasm Consistency Training (OCT), which incorporates the CAT technique. Classic sex problems like female coital anorgasmia and premature ejaculation and modern day epidemic-level sex problems s… Show more

“…If even part of the causal basis for the present findings is vaginal orgasm leading to less use of immature defenses, then the common sex therapy, sex education, and psychotherapy approaches that avoid encouragement of vaginal orgasm amount to iatrogenic damage to women's health. Although a variety of psychotherapeutic options remain to be investigated, at least one intercourse-based (not involving clitoral masturbation) approach to improving vaginal orgasm consistency has been demonstrated [44].…”

“…Only a few interventions (e.g., stop-start, squeeze, Kegel exercises, vaginal dilation) are more dysfunction specific (see Table 1). Although there have been a few new sex therapy techniques suggested over the last 10 years (e.g., Ann, 1997;Pierce, 2000;Ravart & Cote, 1992), they have not really caught on.…”

“…The lack of association between orgasmic consistency from masturbation and from penile -vaginal intercourse has implications for sex therapy, because it supports women bypassing clitoral masturbation techniques in favour of more coitally focused interventions (Pierce, 2000). Similarly, premature ejaculators might bypass masturbation techniques in favour of more coitally focused interventions (de Carufel & Trudel, 2006), and other coitally focused techniques should be developed for other sexual dysfunctions.…”
