The COHERENT Experiment at the Spallation Neutron Source

Abstract: Note there exist a number of abbreviations for this process in the literature, e.g., CNS, CNNS, CENNS. We favor a version with "E" for "elastic" to distinguish the process from inelastic coherent pion production, which is commonly confused with CEvNS by members of the high energy physics community. We prefer to replace the first "N" with "v", for "neutrino", for two reasons: first, "NN" means "nucleon-nucleon" to many in the nuclear physics community. Second, this disambiguates from CENNS, which is the name of… Show more

“…The first experimental evidence for coherent neutrinonucleus scattering was reported in 2017 by the COHERENT Collaboration [59][60][61], using CsI[Na] scintillator exposed to neutrinos with energies of tens of MeV produced by the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory [62][63][64].…”

“…where G F is the Fermi constant, L µ the lepton current, and J µ is the hadron current inside the nucleus. Experimental efforts have been developed in the detection of CENNS, some of them represented by large scientific collaborations namely, COHERENT [8,11], CONNIE [12] and TEXONO [13], among others. As mentioned before, after decades of searching only recently the COHERENT Collaboration [8] announced the first irrefutable detection of CENNS.…”

“…The COHERENT collaboration [3] uses the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge to test coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEνNS) on several nuclei. So far, results from the CsI[Na] and Ar targets have been reported in [2,4], but Ge and NaI [Tl] targets are planned for the future.…”
