The Cognitive Laterality Battery: Tests of Specialized Cognitive Function

Abstract: The Cognitive Laterality Battery of neuropsychological tests is described and normative data and statistics are presented. Selection of tests was based on converging evidence from studies on patients with unilateral cerebral lesions, complete forebrain commissurotomy, and on normal subjects suggesting that visuospatial skills are primarily related to the right hemisphere while verbal and sequential skills are primarily related to the left. Factor analyses confirmed the dichotomy of the test choices. It is sugg… Show more

“…Spatial cognitive ability tests were compiled in the light of cognitive laterality battery (Gordon 1986;Xufeng Liu et al 2004). The measurement instruments in the study consist of four parts (localization test, mental rotation 3D, touching blocks, and Gestalt picture), which can detect different spatial abilities.…”

“…Executive functions involve the ability to respond in an adaptive manner to novel situations (Lezak, Howieson, & Loring, 2004), and similar to other cognitive tasks, some executive functions are lateralized. That is, it has been long established that laterality exists during cognitive tasks, with verbal and sequential skills related to left hemisphere function, while visuospatial and holistic skills are processes of the right hemisphere (Gordon, 1986); these lateralization patterns appear to be true for some executive functions as well (Baldo et al, 2001).…”
