The Cognitive Cycle

Abstract: Abstract-In the twenty years from first grade to a PhD, students never learn any subject by the methods for which machine-learning algorithms have been designed. Those algorithms are useful for analyzing large volumes of data. But they don't enable a computer system to learn a language as quickly and accurately as a three-year-old child. They're not even as effective as a mother raccoon teaching her babies how to find the best garbage cans. For all animals, learning is integrated with the cognitive cycle from … Show more

“…Charles Sanders Peirce developed a cycle of pragmatism of interdependent intellectual activities, comprising observation, theory, and analysis, which provide a paradigm for a research methodology appropriate to the science of broadening participation. Figure 2 depicts this cycle (based on Peirce, 1958, 1997; Sowa, 2015) and emphasizes the heuristic nature of scientific research. 18…”

“… 18. Peirce’s pragmatism integrates reasoning methods with purposeful activities. John Sowa (2015) observes, “The cognitive cycle is a metalevel framework. It relates the methods of reasoning that people use in everyday life and scientific research.…”

“…If or when real interaction becomes possible, we may finally be able to talk about, and with, real AI. But there is a long way to go: see Sowa () for an inspired analysis of AI progress and shortcomings.…”

“…For him, the human body has three (separate but interacting) response systems related to emotion: the cognitive‐verbal, the physiological, and the expressive/behavioural. Translating this into computational terms, we can suggest, as Sowa () does, that redundancy and having several subsystems doing “the same” is an important architectural property of an intelligent system.…”
