The coffee leaf rust pandemic: An ever‐present danger to coffee production

Athina Koutouleas,
David B. Collinge,
Eric Boa

Abstract: Coffee leaf rust (CLR) is caused by the biotrophic pathogenic fungus Hemileia vastatrix. Despite being the most researched coffee disease, mysteries still exist relating to its epidemiology and biology. The objective of this work is to highlight past and present events concerning this prominent coffee disease. We start with an historical overview of the homeland of Coffea arabica, the Afromontane forest of south‐west Ethiopia, and then follow its journey across the globe linked to colonial trade and power stru… Show more

“…According to Koutouleas et al [55], CLR is still a serious plant pathogen affecting global coffee production despite efforts to control the disease in many other countries for more than 50 years. Moreover, the CLR situation in Hawaii is highly relevant due to its recent detection, the lack of studies in the islands and the lack of experience controlling this disease.…”

“…However, the most devastating and economically signi cant disease is coffee leaf rust (CLR), caused by Hemileia vastatrix Berk. & Br, which may cause losses of up to 50% in coffee bean yield (Zambolim 2016; Koutouleas et al 2023). Hemileia vastatrix is an obligate pathogen, which establishes a biotrophic interaction with coffee plants (Azinheira et al 2010;Silva et al 2022).…”
