The Coexistence Potential of Different Wildlife Conservation Frameworks in a Historical Perspective

Abstract: Wildlife management in contemporary society means balancing multiple demands in shared landscapes. Perhaps the greatest question facing today's policy makers and wildlife professionals is how to develop frameworks for coexistence between wildlife and the plethora of other land use interests. As a profession, the roots of wildlife management and conservation can be traced back to the 1600's, but most of the relevant frameworks that have shaped the management of wildlife over time have emerged after the mid-1800… Show more

“…The mutuality of being that characterizes the relationship between Khanty and bears does not fit well with current models of multispecies ethnography (Ingold, 2002, Nadasdy, 2007, Willerslev, 2007, Armstrong Oma, 2010, Knight, 2020, conservation, or wildlife management (Kaltenborn & Linnell, 2022;Glikman et al, 2021). Place/ community-based management that incorporates Indigenous knowledge derived from the long local history of multispecies relationships has been invoked to indigenize the North American Model of conservation (Hessami et al, 2021) and offers some promise of fit.…”

“…Степень этих последствий связана с плотностью лосей, поэтому адаптивная охота является основным инструментом, используемым для регулирования численности популяции на уровне, который приносит выгоды, сохраняя затраты на уровне, который считается приемлемым. По сути, охота на крупных травоядных является формой интегрированного управления конфликтом, который использует охотничий промысел для повышения ценности и снижения затрат и конфликта и, таким образом, достижения устойчивого сосуществования (Kaltenborn & Linnell, 2022;Linnell et al, 2020).…”

“…IUCN SSC GUIDELINES ON HUMAN-WILDLIFE CONFLICT AND COEXISTENCE population sizes at a level that brings benefits while keeping costs at levels that are viewed as acceptable. In effect, the hunting of large herbivores is a form of integrated conflict management that uses hunter harvest to increase values and decrease costs and conflicts, and thus achieve a sustainable coexistence (Kaltenborn & Linnell, 2022;Linnell et al, 2020).…”
