Few persons can be made to believe that it is not quite an easy thing to invent a method of secret writing which shall baffle investigation. Yet it may be roundly asserted that human ingenuity cannot concoct a cipher which human ingenuity cannot resolve. 2It boils down to cryptography. 3 Everything went virtual in 2020, which may or may not have created the perfect storm for the apparent eruption of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in the mainstream press. Of course, NFTs had been around for several years before this but, in March 2021, seemingly all of a sudden and everywhere at once, they were occupying almost the entire news cycle. Everything was NFTs, which is not bad for something that is nothing. The application of NFTs has continued with considerable momentum in recent months, with NFTs entering high-profile art markets in sales at the top auction houses, including: Christie's, 4 who sold Beeple, the first NFT based on an art work; 5 Sotheby's; 6 and Phillips. 7 But NFTs are now well beyond the elite world of contemporary art and moving into the mainstream consumer environments of fashion, 8 film, 9 music, 10 food, 11 publishing, 12 and even architecture. 13 I too am so under their spell,

Dediqué mis observaciones y análisis a las notas 2 (23 de enero) y 3 (9 de abril) reservadas que Torrens envió a la Primera Secretaría de Estado y del Despacho de Relaciones Interiores y Exteriores de México en 1826. En lugar de someter estos ejemplares a un estudio criptológico demasiado riguroso —en especial de sus dispositivos de seguridad— preferí destacar la importancia de la comparación cualitativa con cifras o códigos análogos cuya influencia modélica duró siglos, a fin de mostrar el valor de la historia general de la criptología como guía fundamental para determinar las clases de criptosistemas en las que se debería situar —desde una perspectiva generalizadora, lógicamente— cada uno de los métodos especiales que usó Torrens. Mis inferencias e hipótesis fueron amplias y concisas a propósito de las notas cifradas, pero escasamente informadas en cuanto a los materiales en código, debido a dos circunstancias principales: a) la desigual cantidad de información archivística sobre cada método referido, y b) el muy impar estado de conservación en que se hallan las respectivas muestras documentales.
