An analysis and comparison of daily and yearly solar irradiation from the satellite CM SAF database and a set of 301 stations from the Spanish SIAR network is performed using data of 2010 and 2011. This analysis is completed with the comparison of the estimations of effective irradiation incident on three different tilted planes (fixed, two axis tracking, north-south horizontal axis) using irradiation from these two data sources. Finally, a new map of yearly values of irradiation both on the horizontal plane and on inclined planes is produced mixing both sources with geostatistical techniques (kriging with external drift, KED)The Mean Absolute Difference (MAD) between CM SAF and SIAR is approximately 4% for the irradiation on the horizontal plane and is comprised between 5% and 6% for the irradiation incident on the inclined planes. The MAD between KED and SIAR, and KED and CM SAF is approximately 3% for the irradiation on the horizontal plane and is comprised between 3% and 4% for the irradiation incident on the inclined planes.The methods have been implemented using free software, available as supplementary material, and the data sources are freely available without restrictions.

McClear: a new model estimating downwelling solar radiation at ground level in clear-sky conditions

A new fast clear-sky model called McClear was developed to estimate the downwelling shortwave direct and global irradiances received at ground level under clear skies. It is a fully physical model replacing empirical relations or simpler models used before. It exploits the recent results on aerosol properties, and total column content in water vapour and ozone produced by the MACC project (Monitoring Atmosphere Composition and Climate). It accurately reproduces the irradiance computed by the libRadtran reference radiative transfer model with a computational speed approximately 10⁵ times greater by adopting the abaci, or look-up table, approach combined with interpolation functions. It is therefore suited for geostationary satellite retrievals or numerical weather prediction schemes with many pixels or grid points, respectively. McClear irradiances were compared to 1 min measurements made in clear-sky conditions at several stations within the Baseline Surface Radiation Network in various climates. The bias for global irradiance comprises between −6 and 25 W m⁻². The RMSE ranges from 20 W m⁻² (3% of the mean observed irradiance) to 36 W m⁻² (5%) and the correlation coefficient ranges between 0.95 and 0.99. The bias for the direct irradiance comprises between −48 and +33 W m⁻². The root mean square error (RMSE) ranges from 33 W m⁻² (5%) to 64 W m⁻² (10%). The correlation coefficient ranges between 0.84 and 0.98. This work demonstrates the quality of the McClear model combined with MACC products, and indirectly the quality of the aerosol properties modelled by the MACC reanalysis

Abstract. An algorithm is introduced to downscale the 0.6 and 0.8 µm spectral channels of the METEOSTAT SEVIRI satellite imager from 3×3 km 2 (LRES) to 1×1 km 2 (HRES) resolution utilizing SEVIRI's high-resolution visible channel (HRV). Intermediate steps include the coregistration of lowand high-resolution images, lowpass filtering of the HRV channel with the spatial response function of the narrowband channels, and the estimation of a least-squares linear regression model for linking high-frequency variations in the HRV and narrowband images. The importance of accounting for the sensor spatial response function for matching reflectances at different spatial resolutions is demonstrated, and an estimate of the accuracy of the downscaled reflectances is provided. Based on a 1-year dataset of Meteosat SEVIRI images, it is estimated that on average, the reflectance of a HRES pixel differs from that of an enclosing LRES pixel by standard deviations of 0.049 and 0.052 in the 0.6 and 0.8 µm channels, respectively. By applying our downscaling algorithm, explained variance of 98.2 and 95.3 percent are achieved for estimating these deviations, corresponding to residual standard deviations of only 0.007 and 0.011 for the respective channels. For this dataset, a minor misregistration of the HRV channel relative to the narrowband channels of 0.36±0.11 km in East and 0.06±0.10 km in South direction is observed and corrected for, which should be negligible for most applications.
